Default Coolant temp problem or gauge problem?

I have a 160 degree t-stat, manual fan switch and an autometer temp gauge. The weather finally started getting warm again here and my coolant temps seem to be higher than I remember last year. It was about 85* outside here today. If I'm on the highway my temp will stay around 170. If I'm in traffic without the fan switch on it will eventually jump to around 210 or so, but if I put the fan switch on it drops back below 180. Today the temp gauge seemed to be getting up to high temps quicker than usual. Then I let the car idle in the driveway for about 3-4 mins without the fan switch on and the temp went up to around 230, that got me worried. I put the fan on and it dropped pretty quick, but I'm still curious. I don't remember the temp ever going much above 210 or so last summer even if left sitting. Also, I looked at the stock temp gauge when the autometer read 230 and the stocker still sat just below the 210 reading. I know the stock gauge is crap, but still. Do you think my temp really could have been 230? Has anyone else seen a temp that high? BTW my coolant level is right where it should be.
