Default stock 243 heads with big cam?

How well will stock 243's do with a big cam? .630/.620 range. I'm on a budget so cnc port is out of the question. Will they really choke my 346 much? I can get them cleaned up and polished for $300. Is it worth it or should i stay as cam only and leave them alone?

The 243's wont choke the motor with that cam, i know guys running stock heads w/cam specs like that. Your case the cam, along w/untouched 243's, will see some some gains, and it will support the cam along with raising your compression ratio. Just make sure u accompany the heads w/ the right springs etc.
Edit: I think $300 is too much for just a clean up. U should be able to get them cleaned up and atleast a valve job for that.

Just make sure you have enough PTV clearance. You'll be way better off than the stock heads.

Awesome let me know! I had a pretty mild cam with stock heads a long time ago and it ran great! Hoping it'll run even better now

Hi to all, please when giving cam specs, why do people always think a cam is big if it has big lifts. Cam is measured by durations.
And lift has almost nothing to do with piston to valve clearance. NOTHING.

I was just referring to big compared to stock and head flow limits.

You have to give full cam specs to give anyone an idea how the heads will work.

I am running 799 (virtually same as 243) heads and a Trex cam, no PTV clearance issues.

I'm not worried about ptv. I'm only worried about choking the motor.

I didn't check ptv. Has been fine for the 4k miles it ran after install. Spun a bearing. Heads are coming off soon so I'll see if there are any marks on my pistons

Running a 238/242 .595/.595 112lsa cam in my old 346 and had good ptv when measured, but when I tore the heads off to port them I had marks on every piston where the valves touched atleast once....I guess a few over revs? I got lucky and didn't do any damage, but flycut a hair just to be on the safe side.

i have been debating on running my 244/244 .613/.613 cam with my stock 863 heads on my truck. or possibly 243/799's but have held back bc i have heard about ptv issues. is it different for every engine?? how come some have issues and others dont? headgasket thickness? CC's?
