I found today that the cam had a lot of travel back and forward, I didnt realize because when I torque it was good but when the engine was turn on it started moving, I inspect the sprocket and found out that the ls1 cloyes that I bought it didnt fit right and it was loose, I check it with the older ls2 timing set I had before, and the back spacer is different the new is more thinner than the ls2 sprocket. Do you think this was the reason of the 3 lifters failure?

Here are some pictures

ls1 sprocket

New cloyes single timing set

cam damage

I have the same damage in 2 more lobes

Laredo Texas! I have heard of that place. City is basically on the border, it's a pretty big city but 95% Hispanic I believe, that explains the way your posts are written. Best of luck on repairing your engine.

If you had play in the camshaft due to either the bolts backing out or the wobble from the timing set, then yes, that would have destroyed the lifters as the cam would have been moving back and forth on them.

That sucks.

Get a new cam, get all new lifters, and swap out a different timing set. The 7.4" pushrods are good if you checked and it was at 7.3" - .100" preload is fine for LS7 lifters (which I hate btw - get some Morel 5290s at least).

Is the sprocket actually hitting the retainer bolts? That's what it looks like anyway.

the only thing I can think of is you have the wrong timing sprocket and when you torqued it down it didnt pull the cam into position... so your lifters were halfway on the lobes

did you install the torrington bearing when you installed the timing set?

+1 to it looking like the gear was hitting your retainer plate bolts.

That's what I was thinking. It was causing a ton of endplay

It was a bearing that goes in the back of the sprocket and act as a spacer, I didn't see it in the box and didn't put it in. I didn't know that. I learned that the bad way, But happy I found the problem. I'm ordering another cam and new lifters, with new MLS head gaskets, I still gonna measure pushrond length, just to make sure everything is ok.

Second thread I've seen this happen. The other was done by a professional shop though. Doing things twice is a PIA.

You should also order the new style retainer plate and screws. They use flat head screw so you have more room there too.
