Default Ls6 oil pump?

Just rebuilt my 5.3 and I'm going. Buying me an oil pump just need some input on an ls6 or just the standard oil pump. This is a 2002 motor also I put a high lift hot cam in and CAI . And planning on doing more bolt ons later

Do you have really high HP plans for the motor? If not, the stocker will do just fine, maybe a little porting and a stiffer spring would be a great upgrade. Don't fix what isn't broken, unless you've found a really nice deal.

Or the Synergy High Flow pump.

It's based on the latest GM HV pumps that flow on par with the Melling 10296, but it'll actually fit a double-roller and has been ported/had flashing cleaned up. Rick is a good guy to chat with about that pump. He runs them on stockers and built engines.

If you are going to be in the motor anyway,Replace the oil pump with a melling 295 or
296.

I dont have high HP plans. The motor I rebuilt had a over 100k on it and the oil pump was just fine I had great pressure even at idle. Someone on tech has a ls6 pump with less than 10k for $50. And I'm very interested

If it ain't broke don't fix it. The stock unit is very strong performer, even for high HP applications.

Aren't the '01 up oil pumps the same as an LS6 anyways?

I've read quite a few books on the subject I don't ever recall them mentioning any considerable difference between the years/models of the pump. All I know is they are capable of handling just about anything with a few small upgrades. If it worked fine stock before the rebuild then it will be fine after. Save the $50 for something else like putting it toward coated bearing or upgrading your hardware.

LS4, L99, and LS3 are all different.

LS3 I believe is the conventional LS6, LS4 was a high flow pump with a 52lbs bypass spring. L99 is high flow with a 42lbs bypass spring. All three have different PNs.

He is rebuilding a 2002 5.3L, as stated in the first post. The point then is that he already has an LS6 pump.

Yeah. But GM doesn't make Gen III anymore, so meh. The LS6 pump was carried over.

From what I see a lot of the early LS1 weaknesses are blindly applied to the later engines like the oilpump thing or rod bolts.

Those motors are a minority of what folks are playing with given the number of 5.3 and 6.0l stuff that has been made since.

I have a 04' LQ4 short block. Would it already have a LS6 oil pump? Or did the vortech motors come with different pumps.

All Gen III had the same size gear diameter and thickness, I would assume that they were all the same. I believe the Gen IV differed only for AFM and dry sump needs.

I would replace it with a new gm ls6 pump. They are only around $100. I just changed my lq4 pump to a ls6. I compared the pumps, and the ls6 pump gear is almost twice as thick. I would think that you have the same pump as I do as my engine is a 2002 also.
