Default Replace cam bearings or not. At what milage should it be done?

I'm buying either a LQ4, or 5.3 junkyard motor. I'm replacing the rings, rod and main bearings, head gasket, and rod and head bolts. I'm also planning on swaping cams. Just want to see what you guys think about changing the cam bearings with the cam. Because if the motor blows, then I'd like to save the cam. But not sure if I can reuse the cam after its been run on old bearings.

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

If the motor blows, there's no guarantee the new cam bearings will save the cam any better than old cam bearings.

your clearances and cam journal wear will determine whether you can reuse it or not. for the time being, determine what your clearances are-- if they're between 0.002 - 0.004" I'd run the cam bearings as is

Cam bearings cost like 30 bucks. Plus another 30 or so to get them installed. You might as well since it's all out anyways.

So I see a no, a maybe, and a yes. But I believe all three are great points. I've heard nothing but bad things about all the machine shops in El Paso, but I guess I could get some prices and give it a shot (if they are not within tolerance). Thanks guys.

Cam bearings, yes replace. Why not buy the tool and install them yourself. You can usually find them online for $120. After a couple engine rebuilds of your own or friends it will pay for itself. Just be sure to linup to feed holes in the block and deburr them after they are installed if necessary.

While they are out, check to be sure the passages are completely deburred from the factory. I've found a few that are partially blocked from not being cleaned up properly. You really want to be sure it is completly clean before rebuilding anyway.

I'm actually further away than El Paso. Still in Afghanistan for 6 more months, sigh.....

You're right, I looked further into it and found some write ups on how to do it yourself. Doesnt sound like rocket science to me. Think I'll go that route and fell better knowing all the bearings have been replaced.

I did a junkyard motor and for the 35 bucks for the bearings and 30 bucks to have them installed I had the shop do it while it was there.

I always like to replace cam bearings. I don't see what it could possibly hurt.

OP- shoot me a pm if you like and I can tell you about the block I just got back from a machine shop here in EP. All the bearings look great....
