You can buy a low mile gen 3 6.0 for real cheap. Cheaper than rebuilding the LS1. The SS Camaro you can find in a lot of places, but non with a nice 6 liter in it. The down side is that the block is about 80-90 pounds heavier than the ls1, but you will gain that nice power out of it. If you plan to keep the car forever then I would swap to a 6.0 iron block

The weight is not a concern, the real concern is emissions. What happens when I have a 6L in a 5.7 designated car? I live in VA and we have emission in Loudoun County.

We can get you a 5.7 for as little as $1619 to get you mooving again. We have dozens of options to upgrade and will allow for more power as well. Give us a call and we can get you set up driving your SS again.

I would go with a 6.0 or ls1 from Thompson. You can't rebuild it cheaper than his prices unless u get free parts or labor. Unless you don't need pistons like mine did

Well an obdII pcm check wont show anything different, and a stock 6.0 will still pass a sniffer. Your only issue would be a visual check, but (at least in texas) the most inspectors look for on obviously modified modern domestics is cats. None ever look at block markings. Fwiw though, I hate taking iron blocked fcars over speedbumps. Thats just me though.

good to know, i'd hate to swap an engine only to fail emissions. I wouldn't slap any of those FAST intakes on it or anything. So without doing that or forced induction pretty much all LS engines look the same.

Are they really that annoying to go over speed bumps? lol

Lol yeah That's not a bad weight... I was 250 in college and now I'm 200 so I can subtract 50 from my iron block I'm using...

I'm gonna buy a beater for now and let the camaro sit. I'll have to see if my new job gives me enough play money to fix the Camaro. No engine swap for now, it's all gonna have to wait.

good choice. keep the SS with factory LS1 engine, and mod later when you have the means.

Another option would be to temporarily drop in a 4.8/5.3 engine just to get you back on the road. They can be bought for less than half the price of a 6.0. That way you could take the time to re-build your LS1 right with good components.

I'd say to either buy a beater or lease a cheap car. then when money allows fix the ss. I'd also go with everyone else saying go with a 6.0 short.

I'm bidding on some county Crown Vics, hopefully I can get a Vic for like 1500-2k (my family said they would loan me some money.) That way I can pull over all you troublesome f-body drivers

<- Steve from dcsportbike.

You don't need to worry about emissions, as long as you don't have a check engine light and all readiness codes are set correct it will be fine. Most places don't look for air/egr or even cats they just plug in. Also my car is "garaged" in a county that does not require emissions. That's very easy to do. I still wouldn't put a boat anchor in the front my car no matter how cheap they are. For big power it's a no brainer though.

$1600 for fresh ls1 is a great price btw. I'd tear down the car to access how much damage has been done then go from there. Sending you a PM now.
