Default how to make 425hp

I have an 02 z28 Camaro 6 speed. id like to get 415-425hp out of it. I bought the car with pacesetter headers, 3" magnaflow exhaust, and fast fuel rails. the car may have injectors in it but havnt verified I know the car is running rich. so my ? is how to around 425hp reliably from this car without nitrous? thanks in advanced for any knowledge.

I'm at 430whp coming from a dyno jet. With a budget heads cam intake set up from texas speed.. I don't drive this car often but the drivability is fine aswell as reliability. With out nitrous you will have to look into getting atleast a cam to reach those numbers. There are a ton of set ups out there (cam only. Heads cam intake . Ect).. try searching around and see what you like best and what to expect..
Goodluck ! =)

Good place to start would be a cam with the supporting parts... Bee hive valve springs, hardened push rods and maybe a new timing set or oil pump while you have it apart.

If you are looking for those #'s at the wheels it will be pretty hard to do with just a cam and most likely require a decent set of heads. depending what your budget is you can always find a decent set in the classified section or a vendor like texas speed offers a wide variety of ported heads in all different price ranges...

For a reference point my stock bottom end LS1 put down 426 to the wheels on a mustang dyno with a TSP Torquer V2, a set of hand ported stock 241 castings and all the standard bolt ons.

Are you talking wheel or crank hp? I say because those are two completely different ways of measuring power and would require different setups.

425 at the crank can almost be had with just bolt ons, or at most a small cam

425 at the wheels will most definitely take a cam and at least a set of 243s or worked 241s

to the wheels...thanks guys for all the information. I don want to go outrageous with this just trying to get good power with out breaking the bank. I learned that lesson with my last vehicle. What heads should I go with? also is a torquer v.3 cam a good choice? then I was looking into professional products intake, slp MAF, throttlebody and a good lid or fiter

If I were you, I would go with an LS6 intake, 243 or 799 heads and a Streetsweeper HT cam. That should get you there with a good tune.

Your car already has an LS6 intake so your good there. Port the TB, grab a SLP lip and your golden. A mild cam and some ported 241s should get you right around there. Im a big fan of Advanced Induction for porting stock heads and they are very affordable. Texas Speed is another option that is easy on the wallet. Their 5.3 or 243 ported heads are good options for your desired power level too.

From AI's website:

•219cc Full CNC Porting
•PSI 1511 MaxLife Endurance Springs
•New GM OEM Valve Seals
•Any Compression Ratio from 9.8:1 & up, or Ai optimized for cam selection
•Any HR Camshaft - Ai Custom Grind, or you may specify a grind yourself
•Ai One Piece 4130 ChromeMoly Hardened Pushrods 5/16" & .080" Wall Thickness
•GM OEM .051" Head Gaskets
•In-house QC inspection of your individual camshaft

•Typically manages 420-450rwhp SAE corrected

Cost: $1795 + Shipping

It should be easy. The average h/c ls1 around here puts down 400-425.

Question for you fellas..

Some of you say 400 plus HP can be done with just heads and cam. Does this mean that headers are also implied or can this be done with heads, cam and no headers?

Just curious as I am trying to get as close to 400 HP as I can without putting LT headers on the car.

Thanks,

Q

It will be much easier to get 400rwhp with headers. You can get a cam that is designed for stock manifold but if you ever change to headers you would probably want to change cams then.

Keep future goals/mods in mind when you pick a cam.

Thanks for the tip LilJay..

I will definitely be putting heads on the car (2.5 5.3L's) and maybe even a different cam to keep my options open later down the road. However, for now, I'm gonna try for the 400 mark without headers and see where the road takes me.

Cheers,

Q

If you want to keep the stock manifolds I would probably talk to Patrick G or Shane@ThunderRacing.

Both have experience with the type of setup you are running. Keep in mind when you optimize cam events for a particular setup, those events might not be optimal if you start changing things.

Keep us updated on what you do.
