Question Cam Duration/Lift?

What's the biggest lift/duration cam I can add without flycutting/piston notching? I want to upgrade my cam.

Thanks

It depends alot on the valve events. The X3 will work and also the new TRex from thunder which is much bigger will also work. The TRex is around 242/248 this is living on the edge. Thunder has the thing dialed in. If your going this big your best buying from a sponcer who has a proven cam. You'd probably get into some problems with clearance if you tried to have someone custom grind these specs for you.

You don't need a big cam to make 400RWHP. I saw a 2001 Firebird make 404 at Vinci High Performance in Orlando a couple of weeks ago with a Crane 216/224 Quick Lift cam with the 1.8 Crane Quick Lift Rockers, Ported heads and T/B, Headers and exhaust. The piece drives like a dream, it's a rocket on the street, gets 25MPG and was a breeze to tune. The Quick Lift rockers start the valve off the seat at a 1.89 ratio and then, due to the geometry of the location of the pushrod seat, the ratio decreases to 1.82 by .300 net valve lift. It maintains the 1.82 ratio until it is within .300 of the valve going back onto the seat and then the ratio increases to 1.89. Joe Vinci says the effective duration at .300 is the same as most 224@ .050 cams. It must work, cause that was a great ride!

I am currently making 405rwhp and 385ft/lbs with my mods. I want some more power though. Especially torque.

Thanks

So the Trex won't give me any clearance problems, right?

it might with your ported heads, since it barely clears stock heads. i'd call jason up and find out.

and like tahoe said, you dont need a big cam to make nice tq. do your research on FMS cams.

My heads aren't milled. Is it because the size of the valves?

Thanks

Hey SMOKIN01TA, do you have your pistons notched with that cam? I'm assuming you have stock size valves.

Thanks

I'd call thunder and check. I would also think that a larger valve size would decrease clearance. This cam is already on the edge, I wouldn't chance it.

So then which cam? How about the TSP231/237? I'm looking for a bigger cam for a little more power. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I guess I'm going to go with the TSP231/237. Anybody upgrade to this cam from a 224/224 .581/.581? Any before and after results from both?

Thanks

It's going to be tough to pick up very much peak torque with a bigger cam than what you already have, since the big cams don't start to shine until 5000+ rpm which is past peak torque anyway. A compression increase would definitely help across the board. You can mill the heads .035" and end up with about 10.8:1, which should be good for about 10lb/ft.

Should I mill my heads(if so how much?) or change to a bigger cam(which one?)?Which of the two would gain more power across the band?

Thanks
