Ed really wants me in the Mast SB LS3's, and I have a quirky trick up my sleeve next year if I get them. But I believe he truly knows what to grind to actually take advantage of the heads. I'm glad you made this thread, bc I was just about to start my own. I think aside from a cam swap, I've taken my heads about as far as I can.

OP, hope you don't mind me piggybacking in here. There really isn't a lot of info available on these, other than the magazine test.
Great way to describe the feeling. Its an absolute light switch at 4500. Which is why i dont think a big cam is necessary. Let the heads carry the power out. New cam is 219 231.625 .625 111. Youre right no info on these at all. Im the ginea pig here it seems. Hopefully i can find what works because its a great budget setup. Ls3 intake is basically a fast and with injectors and rails you get for 350. Not to mention there is something to be said about having brand new castings with brand new valves as opposed to ported used stock stuff. Of course the mast stuff isnt budget but the bsp ones are and Ed seemed to think highly about them.

Curious how it feels BELOW 4500. Is it "lazy" or just feels like a stock ls1 or what? Sluggish at all?

Depends how far down you go I guess. I mean it still has good throttle response 2k and up. It's not like the car just falls on it's face or anything. I would say yeah, it feels like a stock ls1.

But it doesn't have the pull of a good h/c/i high comp cathedral head car in that 2000-4500 range. I had both and there is no comparison. My old advanced induction setup was fast everywhere. If you were in 2nd at 3k rpms and stabbed the throttle, it would jump out violently. In this setup, it just kind of revs up and goes. But if you're in 2nd at 4500 rpms, it feels like the car gains 200 ft/lbs.

Only real way I can explain it. I am also missing headers though, so that is part of it. Headers would pump my mid range torque up big time probably. But my exhaust setup is still pretty solid, it is very free flowing, so the top end power is still there and that shows at the track. Also keep in mind I am on a forged 347 with -3.2 zero deck Wisecos, so compression is a little lower. If someone could somehow get 11.0 compression with these heads, I think it would make a big difference.

I think the Ed cam will fix most of the problems though and will make these heads work. It should be shipping soon, so I will keep you guys posted.

That is part of it, but I am still at 10.4 :1, not horrendously low. I did all I could to bring it to that though. Milled .030" and put on .040" gasket.

It wasn't lazy with the other 224/230 cam FYI. That cam worked much better. I am pretty sure my issue is mostly the cam I put in. I am also going to degree the next cam install, who knows, maybe my cam timing is wrong too.

3.910 would be inside the combustion chamber. You need the ls3 size gasket, which is like 4.030" IIRC.

I doubt going from .040" to .036" would gain me anything.

Cool, I am buttoning it up today. Should have driving impressions today or tomorrow and track times next week. The IVC on this cam is 10 degrees less than my current cam.

FYI, Lunati has catalog cams out specifically for l92 headed ls1 cars.

http://www.lunatipower.com/Media/Doc...0LS%20Cams.pdf

Looks like mine is just a custom version of their high lift cam, having less exhaust lift. I trust Ed's judgement.

He told me a bit about your set-up. I think you'll be impressed at the track, that's for sure.

ahhh the suspense is killing me lol. Gotta get the steering shaft back in and the rest of the accessories. Break time over!

The cam degreed within 1, I got .5 btdc. Cam card said 1.5 btdc. I am calling that good since my adjustable timing set only goes in 2 degree increments anyway.

Car buttoned up. Took it out for a couple of blasts and it's MUCH better now. It actually has something under 5k now. I need to tune it now then track next week. Corvette AC cruise Sat, track Sunday. Sounds like a great weekend.

Got a few passes in identical DA tonight as the bigger cam.

I gained .2, 1.5 mph in the 1/4, and 3 mph in the 1/8th. Same DA same 60 foot. My shift point was lowered by 1000 rpms though, which is a good thing considering I am running stock ls7 lifters. I tried to leave it in 3rd gear one pass and ended up losing 4 mph since the smaller cam runs out of steam after 6500. The old cam I could leave in 3rd because it kept pulling to 7200, that's probably why I gained 3 mph in the 1/8th but only 1.5 in the 1/4.

12.2 @ 120 with a crappy 2.1 60'. Not bad for all factory parts and a lower compression forged 347. This forged 347 always dynoed like ****, so I am sure this setup would go even faster on a stock short block. This only dynoed 341 rwhp cam only with 241s/ls6intake. I am leaning towards trying headers to see if I can gain more.

Oh should also add I tinkered with AFR and timing as well.

The best timing was ramping up to 30 degrees by 4000, down to 25 4400 through 5200, and back up to 27 in the high end. I tried going all the way to 30 but got slower. The AFR followed the timing curve. 12.8 to 4000, 12.5 to 4400-5200, and 12.8 to redline.

I refuse to put this car back on the dyno because it's a heart breaker for sure lol.

Thumbs up

Plenty of power - work on the front half of the track.

120 MPH is enough for a low eleven second pass!

There is a track rental in a month that I may participate in to learn how the hell to launch this thing.

Glad to see you found some more mph. Definitely get some more seat time to get that 60' down and you'll have a very solid 11 sec car. Have you tried a drag radial yet? That'll make things much easier and consistent and you'll have more fun at the track without trying to fight a ton of wheel spin.

These passes were on really beat radials. I got some guys worn down MT Et Streets thinking they'd still hook fine. They didn't lol.

I'll see if I can pick up some lightly used ones.

Ryan - nice job on those heads.

Picking up 26+ MPH from the 1/8 to the 1/4 is showing these small bore LS3 heads are the real deal.

We're going to have to work together on other projects.
