A 408 with good heads will get you there.
Good parts are going to be expensive. Nothing you can do to avoid that.

Im gonna go ahead and say that this is also through a 12 bolt rear end, with no dyno tricks, with 17x11 zr1 rims on the car with nittos. It isnt unthinkable by any means, and for the person that said a stroker isnt fun on the street? say that to my neighbors and ask them about all the black marks on my street, neighboorhood, kroger parking lots, publix parking lots, numerous stop lights etc... and ask a few kids around where i live that ive taken for a ride if its fun or not.
Go with a big bore or a stroker , get it built by a good engine builder and be done with it.

Diamond pistons, eagle rods, offset ground crank, TEA stage 2 5.3 heads with a "competition" hand finish on them, I believe the cam is a Futral Motorsports 239/241 595 cam, tuned by Futral and built by futral, all accesories, ls6 intake, etc etc etc.

You Pimp. I didn't mean to offend you in my earlier post. If you were a member with a lot of posts I would have said nothing. With your post count being at like 3 when you started this thread it seemed like you were a newbie and not doing any scearches. You see this all the time.
Anyways I think you have gotten a ton a good posts. Call some of the companies suggested by other members. I perfer AP as does many. I also perfer Absolute Speed for heads. Just who I happen to like. There are many great sponsors here and all willing to help us out. I think a 408 would be a wise choice. And a little cheeper.

Damn!! $6,000.00 for a H/C package + $1,300.00 if you don't already have LS6 heads! = $7,300.00. I'd think you'd be better off going with a stroker, it will be much less 'at the limit' than a 500rwhp 346. It will last you a LOT longer. And it's not much more than that H/C package.

Agree with you that for street longevity purposes, a 382 making 500rwhp would tend to be better than a 346 making 500rwhp.

ok guys after reading for a while and hearing the same thing over and over again hears some info. i have a stock ls1 motor and alot of bolt ons. and am making 400 wrhp so i dont see it being hard to make 500 to 550 at the wheels with a 387ci. now as far as you get what you pay for thats right on the mark. me personally i would save the money and go with a 427ci in a C5R 7.0 liter block. its about 5 grand more but will take you where ever you want to go especially if later on down the road you get greedy and want even more power the 427 will do it. and the nice thing is its an aluminum block. just my .02

First off, to say it CAN'T be done is wrong. It can be done and already has been done. Its about the right combo of parts and the time spent doing the calcs. Not just about the $$ spent. I'm putting together a 6 liter and plan to be over the 500 mark. Once I get the hog up and running I'll be happy to post up the results

500-550 rwhp is just a number, obviously it CAN be done with 427cubes, 408 cubes, 382 cubes or even 346 cubes depending on how wild your setup is. The question isn't really how to make 550 horsepower, it's how close can you get to that (with 475 being close) without spending 427 kind of money and maintaining 50,000 mile reliablity for a mostly street car.
Let me rephrase the question: If you have a similar setup, How much power have you reliably and streetably gotten out of 408-382 cubes? How long have you been running it in the car, how's it drive, and have you had any problems?
Note - yes, lots of these questions could be answered by calling some shops, and asking them how much hp can you build me for $X given these drivability and reliablity desires.
But shops are busy, so no need to take their time up when you are still >1 year away from the purchase. This forum is a better place for these kind of far out "bench racing engine combo" questions.
I've got a few other things to take care of before engine - for example: suspension. because the all stock 110K mile stuff is not going to play nice with any kind of horsepower increase
