stupid question: What causes a dyno graph to have a spike?

stupid question: What causes a dyno graph to have a spike? Is that from a lean condition at the end from letting off the gas?
A friend from another forum claimed when he dynoed his car in 4th gear and when he shifted to 5th, he saw a 20-30hp spike for a second..
What causes that??
