Assuming you have the stock lifters, I believe folks are running between 0.050" to 0.090".

Lifting the head? I'd pull the oil pan and valve covers. Inspect for antifreeze residue.

I'd also check the valve springs for proper pressure open. Be sure to give the valve stem seals a one over.

Valve covers were off and nothing looked bad in there. I'll ask him when the last time he changed the oil and if he remembers how it looked. If not maybe go ahead and change it. Didn't get a chance to check the preload today, hopefully tomorrow or sometime this week.

It doesn't seem to be fuel related because the a/f was good on the dyno, but if all else fails we might have to check it out.

My friend got sort of sick of troubleshooting and short on time, so we never got around to checking preload. He did decide to install a catch can because his oil dipstick kept popping out (he never told me about that!!!) and he says the car pulls so much better now. I recommended he do a real 100psi leakdown test to see if he is getting a significant amount of blow-by that wasn't evident in the 10psi test he did before. It sounds like either he was getting a bunch of blow-by or something was wrong with the PCV system, either way building up a lot of pressure. He's going to get it on the dyno soon to see if his butt dyno is telling the truth. Either way he says it pulls up to 6700 now which it never did before.
