Question Need help one last time on plug issue...

Car Setup

2000 M6
33330 Miles
LS1 5.7 Ported Heads
TR230/224 111LSA Cam
SLP LID

It keeps fouling the #5 Plug... I know that it isn't OIL... It's carbon fouling.

Plug looks exactly like this: Carbon Fouling

Not like this: OIL Fouling

I've switch the 3 and 5 coil packs and the problem stayed with the 5 cylinder. I also switched the plug wires.

Is a faulty injector the only other thing that it could be?

Thanks for any of your help..

Compression test/leak down test on that cylinder compared to the others would help.

A faulty inj could be causing it...so could a valve train problem.

Leak-down testers are reasonably priced now so this would be a good diagnostic tool to get (WWW.JCP.COM).

I suppose you could also use a fuel disconnect tool, pull the fuel rail and change the position of the #5 injector to see if the fouling plug problem moves to a different hole..... Of course you'll have to drive a bunch of miles before you will confirm whether it is an injector issue...

Are you getting any misfire codes that are thrown by the computer?

Since you think you have eliminated the ignition possibility for the cause, if it is not the injector, I suppose it could then only be a burned valve, collapsed lifter, worn cam or other valve event problem...

I had the compression test done last night. The 1-3-5-7 cylinders all ranged from 145-150PSI on the tester that we used...

The exact numbers were:

#1-150 PSI
#3-150 PSI
#5-145 PSI
#7-145 PSI

Compression tests are OK too - swell.

So your likely remaining candidates are spark and fuel.

No mis-fire codes are being thrown by the computer, right?

Do you have a nice hot spark; I suppose I would check all the small wires and connections leading to the injector and coil pack - several months after I did a H/C swap one of the connections came loose and my motor ran like crap?

Obviously, this is a more suptle problem, however.

Next check the clip(s) holding the injector wires on.

If this does nothing, I would see how much a new injector runs; It is not a good idea to change parts unless you can specifically identify the bad part, but if it is $30 - you may want to try a new one.

Well.. I get a blinking SES at idle, but I've been told that it's because of the size of my cam..

I'll recheck the connections on my fuel injectors and coil packs. TSP is having a sale on Fuel Rails and GM injectors so I'm gonna buy one to have a spare just in case.

When we pulled the plugs last night, we noticed that all of the plugs had some degree of carbon fouling so my mechanic said that I should get my tune and see if we still get the carbon build-up..

So I'm gonna get tuning from NOGO at EastSide and see if I still have plug issues..

Thanks for the help guys...

what ended up being the problem ?? I have the same problem but only on one spark plug, I though it was an injector but I swapped injectors in the same rail rode the car for about a week and the plug was still fine, I then swapped coilpacks so I will check it out this weekend to see if the plug is fauled or not. if its not im going to move into doing a pressure test on that cylinder, I broke a rocker in that same cylinder last year.
