Keep goin back and forth on TrueDuals
I currently have a 404 w/ h/bigcam/intake, longtubes, ory, e-cutout, and slp Dual/dual. I keep going back and forth as to whether to switch to true duals or not.
I do love the fact that i can control the car from pretty quiet to insanely loud. The problem is, the loud mode only really sounds good at idle and WOT. Sounds horrible at other volumes. The closed mode is very tame and sounds decent but not anyhting amazing.
One other thing, the dual/dual is pretty heavy and i think duals would save some weight. I don't think there would be much power difference between the setups.

im almost in the same boat as you. If you did duals, would they be dumped or run over the axle?
Ive heard if you run them all the way back, they will be more driver friendly than dumped.

With a 404 if it's built at all you are leaving power on the table with your setup. Duals will sound a lot better and free up some HP but at the cost of losing your quiet mode and some ground clearance.
And yes depending on what pipe and mufflers you use duals could save weight.

But yeah, there's power to be had switching to duals.

I could maybe understand if the cutouts were generally placed near the Y, but most put them after a long length of single 3" pipe before the axle where most duals dump. Just seems unlikely a single with no muffler is going to outflow or even match duals with efficient mufflers given the same length.

my big cam car gained a sotp feel going to duals, but being in nascar mode 24/7 kinda sucks at time not for me just others around, and the sound is 2nd to none,i love the sound ,i thought about going back to a y just because its so loud but i wasnt big on the catbacks, only the gmmg n there to pricey n there just as loud as duals but duals sound better

Mine sounds great with true duals , deep but loud. Mines garage queen though I only drive every couple of weeks. I've got 3" with a x and Moroso spiral flows. I have the x centered to fit through a umi chassis mount torque arm. I made it all over a weekend out of piping and mandrel bends.

Keep in mind that it's entirely possible to build an exhaust that'll flow too much.
Pipes should start large and gradually reduce in size to keep exhaust velocity high as it cools. Big honkin' pipes equal poor exhaust velocity and poor scavenging.
Build it for performance with the correct size pipes front to back and pick the muffs that sound like you want and you're good.

Exhaust velocity is all in the header, after that it could be open and it would be fine. There is no such thing as too big of exhaust. That's only relevant when you are talking about a SBC 305 from the 80s maybe.
