CattleAc - thanks for the note, Makes me feel a whole lot better about the 2000 5.3 I just got with 300k on it. Ran amazing, no codes, but Im still doing rings and bearings for peace of mind for this swap.

Wow. 300K. I just wish I knew actual mileage on mine. Just so I know. When my tuner does his work, will it be stored in the pcm?

Looks a lot like mine did, it had 136K miles.
You are wise to take it all apart.

You might find the bearings just fine BTW.....mine are going back in.
The oil rings on mine were pretty full of hard crud.
My engine had the same brown coating all over the insides....stuff is hard to clean off.

If I'm gonna break apart the rotating assymbly, I'm gonna put it back together with new rings, bearings, and seals. If the old ones are low mile and good condition, I'm replacing anyway. Just want to know I'm starting fresh. I will have them tank the block before they hone it out and put it back together.
I may be able to score a set of 4.8 pistons for free. The guy already gave me a set of 5.3L heads. Thought I read that the 4.8 pistons in a 5.3L bumps up the compression. is this so and would it be a worthwhile upgrade?
