Default Fair price for a LQ9 shortblock?

I found what appears to be an LQ9 (it's in an '05 Silverado SS). The seller claims it has 80k miles. He's asking $1800 for the complete engine. I told him I'd have to give it some thought, as I really only need the shortblock.

Surprisingly, he replied with an asking price for the shortblock. I'm just not too sure what a fair price is for just the shortblock.

To be honest, it seems there are LS3's out there for $5000ish, complete. With this shortblock, I still have to buy everything (intake, rails, injectors, cam, heads, rockers, rods, oil pump, oil pan, accessories, accessory mounts, etc). It seems even going with middle-of-the-road parts, that'll be close to $5000...and weigh 100lbs more than an aluminum block.

Thoughts?

Seems like LQ4 (low compression brother to the 9) go for 750-1500 depending on condition/location. I'd pay more for the flat tops for sure.

Around here COMPLETE they go for $1200 with all accessories and a warranty from the junkyard. For comparison the same deal on a 5.3/4.8 is around $700.

i say pass OP. Check out car-parts.com and see what is nearby. Even if you have to drive 200 miles for a resonable priced longblock, it's totally worth it since most junkyards give some sort of warranty.

Best of luck!

I've been looking at car-part.com. The cheapest LQ9's within 400 miles that have fewer than 100k miles are going for $1800 complete. As a swap motor, I really only need the short block. Virtually everything else will be unusable. Off the top of my head, the only other piece of the engine I might be able to reuse is the alternator.

Seems that selling off the truck parts (heads, intake, oil pan, water pump, etc) is nearly an exercise in futility. A few guys have told me their old truck components are sitting in a box because they "can't give them away."

The guy nearby is asking $950 for the 80k mile shortblock. Other than rod bolts, I'd plan to build upon it as-is.

You contradict yourself with the two posts you've made. In the first one, you say that you'll need to buy everything (intake, rails, injectors, heads, etc.), but in your second post, you say "as a swap motor, I really only need the short block". "Virtually everything else wil be unusable". I"m confused as to if you have another LS motor that you'll be pulling the heads off to put on the LQ9 and other parts that will swap right onto the LQ9. If you don't, you may want to look in the classified section for a complete long block that someone has for sale.

Sorry to be nebulous. As of this moment, I have nothing. I will be putting this engine in an BMW E36. What I meant was that if I buy a complete LQ9 for my swap, I'll end up using nothing from that complete engine other than the short block and possibly the starter and alternator. I'll need to buy L92 heads, LS3 intake, a cam, all new front accessory drive, etc.

The seller offered a complete engine (LQ9) for $1800. I told him my plans for the engine and he offered the short block for $950.

I hope this clears things up.

A budy of mine in Kansas City, MO got a complete LQ4 for $700.00 off Craigslist. If all you need is the short block, the I'd just keep looking unless you need to move on something right away. In all honestly, $950.00 aint that bad for a LQ9 short block. You do have one thing right though; don't plan on being able to sell of the parts you don't need because it's damn hard to give those parts away. Good luck with it all. Sounds like a pretty cool project. If you don't mind me asking, what made you decide to go with the L92 heads? Is this going to be "all motor" or are you adding a power adder?

Well, no decision has been set in stone as of this moment, but I've just read of some impressive LQ9 builds using a stock short block along with L92 heads, an LS3 intake and the right cam. But I've also spoken with Texas-Speed an they believe a properly ported stock LQ9 head (317, I think) can deliver some impressive numbers as well.

Decisions

Yep, ported 317's, 243's or 799's will make great power if given to the proper head porter.
