Can you get a OEM bolt from a dealer or a auto parts store. Or go to a hardware store and get a 10.9 grade bolt and torque it down to arp specs.

Can you find a hardware store that carries a metric nut of the same size that you can run up and down the ARP bolt? Where did you find the tap? DO they also carry the same size die that you can you to clean up the bolt's threads ?

Also, It helps to find threaded rod and nuts to pull the balancer on. Once you get it on good enough you can remove it and use install the crank bolt.

Don't matter you're just gonna screw the crank up again. You never mentioned how you plan on actually installing it correctly this time. You don't honestly think damaged threads are going to hold do you?

And the fact that you think that after 3 threads failed to engage, cutting the bolt shorter will somehow make this work out ok.

Please confirm something: Did you screw up the threads

-on the ARP bolt?

OR

-in the crank?

Yep, if you pull it on with the ARP bolt the same thing will happen. How is this being installed? Sounds like the correct procedures are not being followed and the crank is suffering as a result.

Yessir, I did see that. I'm trying to determine if he damaged the crank threads THEN ran the tap through them and now they're fine.

If he damaged the bolt only, he's still in good shape but I'd think if the bolt threads were damaged, so were the crank threads.

Yep, that's the dumbest thing I read all day. If you strip the threads, the tap doesn't magically put them back. To the other guy that suggest he "just needs a bolt", well when he gets his hands on one, he is gonna try the same procedure again.........

Don't hammer the crank pulley on. Get some threaded rod.

Yeah, we all know that. Most of us also know that if he's screwed up the bolt threads, he's probably also screwed up the crank thread.

We're all just trying to prevent him from doing any more damage.

It'd be great if he stepped back in here to update us-or respond to our posts.

Why would he step back in? He asked a question and can he cut the three damaged threads off and still use the bolt not would you pull the crank out and start over or do you have a damaged thread on your motor geeez. The answer is obviously we don't know. Call Grainger or Fastenal find out tensile strength see what they think, or you could try arp although I'm sure they will say no to avoid the fall out if something did happen and they want to sell you. Personally if your still getting around 75% of the total threads you had before and it torques to 235ft/lbs I would run it. Bolt just presses the pulley on and holds it just check it when you stop the first few times mark it see it it moved my opinion. And I don't want to come inspect your work lolhlol you never know the person your talking down to might be smarter than you obviously you were smart to enough to know to ask for help. Good luck.

Ssgmatt, welcome to LS1tech!

You've replied to a thread that's seven years old. I'm certain the OP has this fixed.
