Default NEED HELP. Oil burning/lean etc

Just had my engine rebuilt and forged recently by a local builder.engine has about 1200 on it and I started hearing a "ticking " sound. Turns out I had a quart of oil in it and the thing is burning oil. My engine builder did a leakage test and it was about 5% on all cylinders. after pulling the plugs #4 cyl was burnt up with a LOT of carbon. looks like burnt oil. We put oil in it and new spark plug in #4 also Have the following
-Smells really rich and smells like oil
-Wideband 02 reading 17-21 (really lean)
-P0300 (random missfire probly from cam)
-p1135(Bad o2?)
-Loss of power
Is the O2 reading high because of the burning oil? How should I go about finding the oil burning? should I put money into replacing o2s? I have roughly $7k into this build. Any suggestion are appreciated

You did a leak test which would rule out your valve seals, but did you compression test that #4 by chance?

A leak test won't rule out the valve seals. Both valves are closed so no air is at the seal to leak out.

Ok awesome cause I'm really hoping its the seals not the rings. Is it hard to do seals?

It's not hard if you have the right tools. By how much oil it sounds like your burning I would be surprised if it was the seals though.

If you're engine leaked down 5% than you have a major issues with oil getting down through the guides! 5 quarts in less than 1200 miles is a lot of oil! I can't even see a couple broken valve stem seals causing that type of oil consumption. You said the engine only has 1200 miles on it? Did you have the heads rebuilt too? And also, a leakdown test only tells the condition of the valve faces, valve seats and piston& rings.

With 5% leakeage the valves should be just fine.

Ive change the oil at 20miles 500 miles(to syntyhetic)and at 1200 (just now)so i burned through about 5 quarts of oil over 700 miles. I did not have the heads rebuit but i did have them deck to put my compression back up with -3.2cc pistons and smooth for steel head gastket. My mechanic said to take off intake (ls6 is for sale btw) and check intake runner for oil then take off header and check that one. Am I on the right track?

He also said nothing"fancy" like synthetic for 5,000 and is kindof trying to put it on me for doing it . I dont think synthetic is going to cause oil burning

Uh oh! This threads gonna last till hell freezes over now that you mentioned "Break-in with synthetic". There is a lot of opinions about synthetic causing the rings not to seat. You have to be getting a lot of blue smoke out the exhaust. I don't understand how your engine builder did a leak down test and said it was at 5% but now is blaming you for the rings not sealing.

When car is idling there isnt any smoke at all and just smells like oil. I ran the car easy for 500 then took it to the track as a lot of research said to.I dont think this will have anything to do with burning oil and I just want to find possibilities for what is causing it to burn in #4cyl. Also if synthetic was at fault ALL cylinder would probly be doing it not just one

If it burned 5 quarts in 700 miles it should look like you are crop dusting while driving to work unless its dripping out onto the ground.

I know you said you didn't have the heads rebuilt but are they ported? If so did you use liquid teflon or something similar on the rocker arm bolts?

When does the car smoke? If its actually burning that much oil HAS to smoke sometime. Start up, WOT, letting off after WOT.

Has the car done this since it was assembled or just recently start doing it? Has the car been tuned? What size injectors?

How well do you trust the guy that said there was 5% leakdown? That's a tight, really tight motor. Maybe he installed the oil control rings incorrectly.

When I was a kid I built "I use that term loosely" a SBC 406. It smoked like a freight train. Ran 7's in the 1/8 mile but smoked and burned lots of oil. Turns out I had the second ring upside down. I never did a leak down test, hell I probably didn't even know what a leak down test was then.

Im half and half with how well i trust him. seemed to do a good job and explain things well but then again it took 5months for him to do it! But Ill check the smoke things tommarow. I know forsure that theres more smoke when WOT.The heads were not rebuilt just decked. and they are stock unported. And Id say that its been having the oil smell just more recently gunna try a leakdown test like eric the car guy on youtube

Do you know what rings he used and what grit the cylinder walls were honed at?

There are only a few things that can cause oil consumption and all have been mentioned.

Smoke on accel is "typically" rings
smoke on decel is "typically" guides but can be seals if they are trashed enough
smoke on start up is "typically" seals but can be guides if they are loose enough to dump a bunch of oil on top of the seals while the car sits.

One thing I don't know(one thing of many actually)is if the first and second ring can seat properly and the oil control rings not. I don't know if there is some sort of relationship between the two.

If it didn't smoke before, and IF the only thing that's different is the bottom end was rebuilt I would lean towards a ring problem.

Did you put a bigger set of injectors in it and drive the car before it was tuned for them?

I'm just thinking out loud here and I have been doing this long enough and know people well enough that you have to pry a little bit to get the whole story. Please don't take offense. I've been in your shoes. Hell my 2000 Firehawk is sitting with no engine in it because of someone else's screw up.

I agree with Jay on this... need more info. Especially on the injectors/tune. If that wasn't done, you washed the cylinders down with gas and you didn't get proper ring seal.
