Posting up random 1/4 times is pretty meaningless.. Untouched 243 castings have been 164mph on a bone stock L33 bottom end with a small cam. I went 8.93 @ 153 on unmodified 317's castings and 8.6:1 compression with a JY 5.3. Many have gone faster.

On a side note...

Don't the 853 heads have some sort of notch in them that requires a mill and or use of composite type head gaskets? What is the CC size after having this milled out? Any HG clamping issues in boosted applications?

Not random when.its backing up m previous statement w 853 heads going 8.95. Early 853 had a notch and someof the 2000 models had 853 w/o the.notch

Without having anything to compare it to... it is pointless information.

If you had Head flow numbers, Vehicle weight, engine specs, altitude DA etc... That might give it some meaning. The fact that an 853 head went X.XX in the quarter tells us nothing. Any casting LS head in stock form can run an 8.95.

Slap some 853's on a built 370 with tons of boost in a light enough chassis and I'm sure it could go 7's

the ls1 head is a pretty good head design ,853s flow a little less then 243s in stock forum ..853 can be found for cheap ,and are good for raising the compression .

How is it pointless to the op when he is asking about 853 heads and chevyrunner is telling him they're junk and only run 243 heads? Any your absolutely right, any ls head can run 8.95, yes im sure 853's would go 7s.

All LS heads are good, just depends on how much you have to spend on a set to optimize them. Too many people jump on the 243 bandwagon but there are a bunch of folks making power with other castings. 243's are simply a better head only if your going to do nothing but unbolt the LS1 heads and bolt them on. But who the hell wastes their time to take a set of heads off and not make it more worth the time and effort LOL

im sure you can make a bunch of power with any head, but my point was if your going to go through the effort to invest in heads why invest in the worst ones...

Understandable point, but some people don't want to spend $450 just to get a set of stock 243's and then have a stock set of LS1 heads sitting around because you can barely sell them for the price it costs to ship them.
