a long block over a short block, and at what point would the extra $$$ be worth spending for the long block?

A long block is simply the entier motor. (i.e. crank, rods, heads, camshaft, etc...)

A short block is simply just the block minus the heads and cam.

If your looking to customize your setup start witht the shortblock and then tailor your needs from there. (i.e. picking your cam, picking your heads, etc...)

Wow. I feel like a real idiot now. That terminology seems odd. Wonder why their not just called bottom end and complete respectively.
