A short block is simply just the block minus the heads and cam.
If your looking to customize your setup start witht the shortblock and then tailor your needs from there. (i.e. picking your cam, picking your heads, etc...)

Re: What are the advantages of... Wow. I feel like a real idiot now. That terminology seems odd. Wonder why their not just called bottom end and complete respectively.
