Carbon buildup

I'm starting an engine swap into a 59 apache. My junkyard takeout ls has carbon buildup in intake and intake ports on heads. I'd rather not pull the heads. What's the best way to clean the ports on the heads?

I'm worried about all that carbon dropping into the cylinders as I clean the ports on the heads. Heads are on the motor. Do u just stuff a rag down port and hope u can get most of the stuff out without dumping into engine?

if you want it done 100 percent, pull the heads and clean them seperate from the engine, plus you can clean the carbon off the pistons this way also.

Yeah, pull the heads. It'll only cost you some gaskets and bolts.

Pull the heads, I wouldn't want all that cleaner/dirt going into the cylinders and possibly causing a condition for cylinder scoring to occur among other things.
