OK, let's concentrate on the head & valve train.

Pull the rockers and examine the pushrods.

Automatic cars have a flexplate. It's kindof thin stamped sheetmetal designed to allow the torque converter to "float" in the transmission pump. It does flex a bit.

Stick cars have a heavy thick flywheel.

Well, hubby is convinced that it is the flex plate. Hmmm, now that's a job without a lift.

I pulled my transmission and engine without a lift. Jackstands!

The sound only happens when the valve cover is installed? That's weird. If it's stock valvetrain, it's probably not hitting the valve cover, unless a rocker arm broke or valvespring broke and the pushrod is just smashing the destroy piece into the valve cover. But you'd see that.

Aw, heck, I don't know. I guess my husband is going to start with the flexplate and see if that is the culprit.

By the way, HAPPY NEW YEARS EVE everyone!!

I just miss driving my Hawk. That's all. By the way, here are some pictures. Me before kids, and then a recent picture on a run to Pigeon Forge.
I am also testing to see if I did this right or not. lol

Yep, cool pics, thanks.

Yeah, I'm still stumped about the sound going away with the valve cover not bolted down.

After carefully watching those videos, its my opinion that the sound doesn't happen while the engine is cranking. The first video sounds like the engine ran for about a second before shutting down. And that is when i heard the noise. I could be wrong, just what it seems like from the videos.

with the valve covers off it looks like the coil packs and ignition is disconnected. Sometimes just turning over the engine without it actually running is not enough to produce the same sound. Leave the cover off and actually start the car and see if the sound is there

You beat me too it. You need to let it actually run with ignition in all eight cylinders. You might even be able to unplug one plug wire or coil pack at a time in attemts to change the noise and isolate the cylinder in question.

As far as the water leaking from the cowl onto the intake; I have read alot about this and really thought it wasnt a intake gasket concern as much as a fuel injector o-ring concern. I recall #7 being the biggest problem with t/a's.....Just my .02

I washed my car one afternoon at home and didn't drive it afterwards. Next day my brother calls me, says theres a rod sticking out the block after cranking it. Removed the heads and one cylinder had water in it. It was not antifreeze! I always suspected the manifold but it ran great. I believe it was #6 on mine.
