Default Looking for input on new engine build

Im going to start building a motor for my 1968 Corvette, and Im looking for some input on the direction. For starters, I will be using new Inglese 8-stack ITB set up with FAST EZ EFI 2.0.
http://www.fuelairspark.com/fas/efi-...duction/gm-ls/

I will be running a close ratio TKO600 5spd with a 3.55 rear. The goal is to be in the neighborhood of 450rwhp and 400rwtq as this will be primarily a street car that sees occasional auto-x work. Obviously, this is not a terribly lofty goal, but what Im looking for is a motor that will rev quickly, with excellent throttle response, and good power under the curve. At the moment, Im almost leaning towards going with an aluminum block 5.3 with the flat top pistons, then adding a set of either Trick Flow's 205 heads or AFR 210 heads and a nice cam.

The whole theme of this car Im building is kind of Trans Am racer meets british roadster, something light and agile with a motor that likes to be run through the gears...hence the intake set up a few other details that arent a part of the engine build.

Again, im just starting the planning process, so any input is much appreciated.

Are you planning on using the stock L33 flat top pistons or going after market ? Keeping the 3.78 bore size ?

With the heads you listed you'll be around the 9.8:1 compression ratio. If your going to keep the stock pistions I would talk to AFR about milling the 210's down a bit to get the compression up to the 10+ range. That will help with a snappy throttle and nice power on a road course.

Cool project you got going on, can't wait to see some progress. My dad has a 76-C3, I keep trying to talk him in to a LS swap but he's not giving up the old sbc any time soon.

yes, I was planning on keeping the flat top pistons and milling to be in about the 10.5:1 range

Why not use some ported OEM heads and build a 347ci shortblock instead with the savings? It'll make your power goals easier to achieve and provide a nicer overall powerband.

And that was one of my questions, will the 5.3 rev any quicker that the 5.7, everything else being the same? Additionally, I have to admit, I think theres something cool about keeping the car a "327" (I know, its actually a 324), if I can achieve the power and throttle response goals with the smaller motor.

That was another route I was looking at....Texas speed has a pretty affordable 383 short block using the 5.3 block. Its another $600 for the LS1 block. Any disadvantage to the 5.3 block?

I trust the iron 5.3 more than I do the Aluminum 5.7. I have seen more catastrophic failures with the 5.7 than I have with the 5.3. I pulled one out of my car and about to pull another out of a car I just bought, both pushed a rod through the cylinder wall. With that said there are a ton of people making a ton of power with the 5.7.

Im going aluminum either way....my 2003 Z06 made 452 rwhp and 409 rwtq on the factory long block with just CNC'd 243 heads and a cam, so Im well aware of the potential in the 5.7L, Im just curious as to the potential of the 5.3L, and how that translates to how the motor performs on the road.

Thanks for that thread....was an interesting read....Ill definitely be paying close attention to the outcome. Im wondering: if so many of the issues people have had are related to the MSD box and distributor set up, will the fact that the LS set up runs both the fuel injection and ignition help alleviate some of the issues?
