Default deburr bare block

gots clean lq4 block going to prep for future build. I know to knock the sharp edges down on everything on outside but what about inside? I'm looking at the casting alignments in the valley and the oil returns could use some smoothing. do you guys see anything wrong with blending those areas? that and just all around smoothing of water ports etc. seems like a common sense thing to me just not overboard on any one thing looks to be a cheap safe mod to me. also are used blocks a good basis for a long term build some say they are stronger due to it already being heat cycled so many times. I've heard of this also. opinions are greatly appreciated. the oldman.....

If you do deburr the block make sure you clean it very good. Don't want any metal shavings in your oil passages.

I did all of that to my bare LS1 block when it was apart. Make sure to either hot-tank it or thouroughly wash it (with brushes in all passages) afterwards. I got rid of all the casting flash externally and internally on all the areas I could access.

thanks guys, I had it hot dipped and magnafluxed when I tore it down then the machine shop put some kind of spray on goo to keep from rusting. I don't think it would hurt to grind and leave it until I build later in year? as you say make sure it's clean first. also seasoned block stronger because of heat cycled???

I wouldn't say that a used block is "stronger", just that its proven to have no issues, if taken from a well running engine.

Used blocks are not necessarily stronger because of heat cycling but are truer.

After heat cycles and vibrations the metal relaxes or settles into a slightly different shape their "natural" shape. Once the metal settles into the new shape it won't change again. So once the seasoned block is machined it will hold that shape.

I know that this is not the best explanation but I hope you get the intent.

I know what you're talking about - there's definitely some casting flash inside the engine above the cam. I plan on taking that off with a carbide burr.

ss performance, thank you sir that was the perfect explaination. i'll probably use flat and round files where I can to take my time. as far as power tools go I have finesse issues. so I play it safe when I have to.. thanks the oldman..
