Default Engine rebuild questions

I have been out of the game for about 4 years now since i totaled my 99 z. It feels like i have been in prison by driving a honda civic since then(gas mileage). I have a friend who has a 02 ss that needs a rebuild. I could pick it up and have about 2500-3500 to have the bottom reworked. I havent decided what to do yet, buy a complete short block or have someone local rebuild it. I'm not interested in building it up to handle massive power. I would be happy to pick up a stock short block if at a reasonable price. Since i've been out of the game so long....Are there any other alternatives where i can use stock heads and intake. I have been looking around but don't know anything about the ls3's and compatibility issues. I will take it out and do the install, I just dont have the tools and equipment to do a rebuild myself. Thanks for any suggestions. Paul

Sounds like you are ready to get back into the game again congratulations. If the top end of the car that you are looking at is ok I would just buy a good short either new or a good used one cam it and let it go.

As far as compatability on the LS3, all of the bottom end of the LS are the same ( from what I have found out ) top end is all different. If you go LS3 you will need to match the heads, rocker arms, and intake. As the older ls is cathederal port and the ls rectangular port design.

You can use the LS3 but the reluctor wheels will be different. Then you will need a converter box, drill and tap for the knock sensors, extend wires and all that fun stuff. I think an early model LS2 out of a GTO would work (they are 24X) or any of the pre 05 6.0 iron blocks would be best for a direct swap.

I saw that company last night but don't know anything about them. Are they good? Iron or aluminum? Hypereutectic vs Forged? This might be my route, thanks.

Aluminum if staying NA, as far as pistons it just depends on your goals with the car..

If you only plan to do bolt ons then stock hypereutectic will work..

Thompson has some great prices. Kyle will hook you up!

I am looking to do a forged bottom end myself for my Procharged 01 Z06 for piece of mind.

Just can't decide forged 347 (LM7 block) or Forged 370 (LQ9 block) for about $700 more.

We offer them and have them in stock. I will PM you information. For what you are looking to do, there is no need for Forged internals.

X2 on Thompson, I just ordered a short block from them last week. They are a very well reviewed company with the best customer service in the business

You've got some good engine builders local to you and some good shops to get the install done, or whatever else you're wanting.

Locally, I've used Westside Machine a lot for stock rebuilds and they're very reasonable for costs. Drop off your hurt block, and unless it's cracked a sleeve, they'll typically rebuild it for less than $1000. Price goes up if you decide to use aftermarket pistons and rods, or if the block is junk though.
