Default Picking a cam (all information included)

Hey guys I am strongly considering doing heads and cam this tax season on my 02 Trans Am WS6. Ls1. 6 speed

The car's use: street/strip more street currently than strip but I might start hitting the track more this summer.

Current "mods": SLP lid, ls6 intake, hooker headers, ORY, borla exhaust and anything else is listed in my signature

I am pretty set on going 243s as far as the heads go. I may go with PRC but it all comes down to the money aspect.

I want a cam that will have good drive ability, make good power, and not be too hard on the valve train since it will pretty much be a daily driver at least in the summer. I am really interested in the ms3 but am wondering your opinions. I think I want a Texas speed cam but am open to opinions on the heads and cam

Thanks for your time in advance

My goals are 11s with the car. Stock rear end right now that I will revamp later. 3.42 gears

For the purposes of the car you state, the MS3 and other max effort cams are not what you should be looking for. It is kinda the opposite of what you say you want.

A nice mid size cam will make you much happier on the street but still allow excellent track times.

If you want to order from Texas Speed give them a call and they can help spec you something or talk about their off the shelf stuff other than the MS series. I suspect their Torquer V2 would be better suited for your needs.

Thanks for the honest opinion. I emailed them yesterday and if I don't receive one back today I'll call them tomorrow since I'm off work tomorrow. I want something that I won't regret putting in later if I decide to orient it more towards the track. I will be getting a beater at some point but for now the ws6 is going to be driven consistently In the summer.

EPS 226/230 would be my choice. Mild endurance lobes and a profile that will be easy to drive and tune. And will work with the 3.42s.

The LSA will be determined by the heads. If you go with ported 243s and mill them down, you can go with a 113+2 LSA as you'll have more compression. If you keep the stock heads and lower compression, I'd do a 111+4 to help build more cranking compression. That does change the powerband a bit as well. The 111 will be choppier and peak sooner, but the 113 will drive better, carry the power a little higher, and make more power due to the extra compression and airflow of the ported heads.

Something in the high 220's on intake and low to mid 230's on exhaust side would suite you well. Ed Curtis at Flowtech Induction can help you out. He has "endurance" cam lobes that would be perfect for a daily driver.

The 230/238 EPS cam I run is excellent and others have had similar results. A friend also runs the same basic thing in his stock headed m6 DD and it drives perfect (did so with 3.42 and the current 4.10)

For what it's worth, when I put 243s on my car they will be revamped and not just slapped on and I would like to mill them down to increase compression, also I do want to do 4.10 or 3.73 gears in the next few years or so

You might as well have the 243's sent to Advanced Induction or TEA to be ported.

+1 with the Torquer v2 and 243 heads. I'd get the 243 heads ported while they're out of the car then top it all off with a good dyno tune.

You really need to decide on heads and gearing before buying the camshaft, because it does change the recommendation. TEA or AI ported 243s with a 4.10 would be different than stock 241s and 3.42s.

Also, the head itself will help determine the profile of the cam. For example, Rise of the Phoenix has AI ported Darts which have outstanding exhaust flow qualities. Because of that a single pattern or mild split of 2-4 degrees is all his heads need to make optimum power whereas stock ported heads still probably would prefer a 4 to 8 degree split.
