Good to hear that the 220 cam is starting to work for you. It has to be the knock retard that makes it feel different. I think it is very true that the computer needs some time to adjust to an engine mod. I haven't had the opportunity to review all of my latest logged data to see what's happening with my mid range timing. It felt strong during the track runs.
Anyways good luck with the asp-kicker and please post-up your impressions after your done installing it. I'd like to know how much of a difference the cam feels off-idle vs. the 220.

I just grabbed some logs tonight, and I'm still getting about the same amount of KR. What I find odd though, is that I don't feel it. I can get a 9* burst cruising up a hill, but I never feel power drop off.
I'm starting to get attached to the cam now. The exhaust note sounds great - clean, smooth and loud(er). The power delivery eggs you on to really get into it. I can't believe the difference.
I don't notice any more excessive valvetrain tapping. It's a rather normal sewing machine noise now.
I'm definitely keeping the '220 around for my planned head swap in the spring. I'll see which cam I like better, and run it from that point on.

Nuzee, Joe, Roger - I got the 047 installed. I freakin' love it. You guys aren't bullsh*tting us.
It makes excellent torque at any RPM, and at any amount of pedal. It feels like a small turbo. The motor just pulls EVERYWHERE. Throttle responce is near instant. There are no flat spots, no "iffy" spots where I'm not sure if it's pulling good... the thing just boots.
From just plain putting along with a cop behind you, to playing around at the stoplights, to full WOT runs, the cams suits it all.
Can you tell I'm excited?
EDIT: Oh yeah, and not a hint of valvetrain noise. You have to love that.

All that crap I took during this thread, and you bought a make-believe hotcam. Could the specs come any closer?
219°/228° 0.525"/0.525" 112LSA
210°/218° 0.531"/0.531" 112LSA
You traded a little lift for a little duration....sigh. I can't believe how much crap us hotcam owners take for +9°/+10° -0.006"/-0.006". It's insane that much difference can be the difference between a good choice and being scoffed at.

ALRIGHT! Good to hear the great news. Very happy for you! TORQUE makes slower speed street driving fun.
My PCM I think finally settled down too. Off-idle & mid-range power is now always there no matter how aggresively I tip into the throttle. Breaking my tires loose while slowly rolling along became much easier too. Time for more traction mods.
This has been a great thread because of the information that you have provided. Thanks!

Good to see you still around on this board! Damn lurker, j/k
Since the cam install, I've been to the track once. I was able to beat my previous best times for 60 ft, 1/8ET, 1/8mph, 1/4ET & 1/4mph. I picked up 2 mph in the 1/8. The best run was 1.89, 8.2@88.0, 12.79@108.4. I was adjusting shift points on the HPP3 and seemed to have dialed in the 1-2 shift. I wasn't able to optimize my 2-3 shift before the night was over. So there still maybe some more 1/4 trap speed to be had.
Whenever I do a mod, it is just like starting all over trying to learn how to drive it off the line. I think the stock converter is calling for brake-stalling instead of just flashing. I'm wanting to be able to go solidly into the 1.8s on the stock converter. That'll make me happy as well as getting another mph in the 1/4trap.
I will let you know the next time I head out to the track. I haven't seen you run for awhile. I'd get all pumped up seeing you put a licking on those trailered cars!

Check out the "fatness" of the VHP lobes. (Top to bottom - TR220, stock, 047.) I wish I took a better picture to represent that - but I had the lifters hanging in the background. The VHP lobes at least by eye, sure looked like they have more duration at .200, .300, etc. - just like their website says. I was originally skeptical, thinking these VHP cams were Cranes "take" on the XE-R lobe designes out there. Like I said, these VHP guys aren't BS'in us.
I had some slight idling issues with the 047. Idle was going soggy, and rpm's would drop when coming to a stop. I simply addd more air, and I'm idling at 525-G, 550-P/N bone-stock PERFECTLY. There is a slight hint of lope to the trained ear.
From what I hear about the HC, it's quite difficut to tune - is that correct?

You f-body guys would have lots of traction problems with this cam too - it makes LOADS of torque at 2K and up. It makes the engine feel like it's running much more effortlessly. Literally, like there is a small turbo that spools up by 2K.
Mine is just a little soft down under 1,500, but that's all relative. At 1,500 the cam is alive and makes the same or slightly more power than stock. Power ramps up to 2K, where the meat of the powerband starts. From there it pulls very clean and hard to the shift, currently at just 5,900.
I've got to get this thing locked up in 3rd on a dyno.

One last thing to add... KR.
I was getting 8-9* of KR at the stock 34-35mph, 1,100rpm unlock of the TCC. That made me nervous.
I raised the TCC lock/unlock points by about 4mph, and it cleared up completely. I'm now locking/unlocking around 1,400-1,500rpm, where the engine is breathing pretty healthy.
I get about 1-2* of KR when I agressively jump on it, but that can be tuned out easily enough.

The HC can be a pain in the butt to tune. Now that I see how to do it, I could do another easy. It's just figuring out how to do it right the first time. My idle is pretty smooth. It's perfectly smooth at 950, but I backed it off to 900 and added a bit of timing and it ran fairly smooth. I started doing some VE tuning, and without the MAF plugged in (after the trims caught up) it idles almost like stock. I wish I would have tried it sooner...

Nice! I've been out of the tuning stuff for a bit. I had to take a step away and let things sink in some more.
