That doesn't sound good lol Is it louder up top of the motor or underneath?

Perhaps a collapsed lifter. Normally rods don't just spin while the engine is off. Id pull the valve covers back off and turn the engine by hand checking the rockers for slack. Hopefully you get lucky and its just a lifter that got collapsed while valve spring was compressed and it wont prime back up. My damn 2009 Yamaha Raider 1900 did this exact thing almost every time I started it.

Still not sure....couldn't see anything wrong with rockers when cranking it....seem tight just slight side to side movement.....car was also missing when running....guess I'll do a compression check next...

Thanks,
John

Did the sound appear all of a sudden?

I will agree with JRENIGAR about keeping tabs on the lifter possibility.

Lifter taps seem to be the preferred suspect to taps over piston slap and whatnot, but after seeing this, I learned bad lifters are not to be taken lightly:

Learning from this guy's ordeal, I think it's best you minimize running the engine until you can rule this out.

Generally, is there a way to differentiate between a lifter that has collapsed/broke apart from a lifter that's simply worn with loosened tolerance? Either case will generate taps, but the first case could potentially destroy the entire engine with debris circulation whereas the latter can tolerate continuous service.
