Default cam or turbo

Have a 99 z28 full bolt on and can't decide which way to go. I still have the stock ls1 and trying to decide if I should go cam or turbo. My eventual plan is to get a lq4 or lq9 and build it but that will take time. I want to do something performance wise now. I'm posting from my phone so I'm not sure if my mods will show in a sig or not. Just trying to get some insight

Your stock bottom end won't last long going over more than 8+ lbs of boost. You could do a cheap non ported set of ls6 heads milled along with a cam and get around 420-430 to the wheels or so.

Well I'm getting my hands on some 799 heads for free and was going to get them cleaned up and everything. Was looking at the ms4 cam or the torque v2 cam.

Cam... Torquer V2 will do good. You can port and mill the heads. Or try getting some 243s.

I thought 799 and 243 heads were basically the same

They are. AI, TEA, Texas Speed, Livernois, Flowtech Inductions, WCCH all have CNC programs for 243/799 heads.

How much is your budget and how much power are you looking to make? What other supporting mods do you have?

Some cam only cars get lucky and go over 400. My car needed a set of heads as well because the stock 1998 806's are weak.

400 at the wheels can be done cam only pretty easily. No need to go turbo to do that. Now, if you're going to want more, then going turbo might be the smart thing to do.

Turbo you will have better drivability & same sort of power with low boost as a med/big cam

8lbs from what? And where does that number come from? There are many in the forced induction section dispelling that rumor as we speak.

Boost does not equal horsepower, so your statement is invalid.

There are dozens of guys in the forced induction section pushing 15-20+ pounds of boost at anywhere from 600 to 900 horsepower to the wheels on a stock LS1 with a cam. Some of them have been at that power level for a couple of years now.

And looking at cams I was planning on ordering cam kit with springs and pushrods. Also ls7 lifters. Oil pump. Timing chain. Trunion upgrade. I'm at about 130k. Anything else I should get? Or need

Well I know it's not the greatest route. But if I went turbo I could do an eBay kit. Put it on and replace the turbo later with a better one. Not the greatest way to do it I know. Just want more power

$2,500 still won't cut it..

Also a good turbo tune is expensive lol at least 500-1k is an average range..

There's so many little things that add up that you would never think of, oh and the fabbing, labor, time to finish it etc...

A turbo car is a diffrent animal compared to a cam build

Posted earlier. Clutch was a stock replacement. Know it won't last long so that will be the next thing after a cam. Few months and I'll replace it again. Have a 9 in with 4.10s now
