Default 370 tight budget

I have a 370 short block with mahle -4cc flat tops but Im on a really tight budget. Currently im pulling out a 5.3 with ls6 cam and 862 heads. Already have arp studs and gm gaskets for the swap.

Now i know the 862 heads will really choke it back so im gonna pick up some cheap 317s.

Question is will the ls6 cam affect the peak power or power band negatively?

This is going in a truck and i intend to keep it mild, quiet exhaust, low overlap, just a street truck.

Need your opinions. Just want it to pull strong/smooth through the power band.

I would try to pick up some 243 or 799 heads and run the ls6 cam if your on a tight budget. The extra compression will give you some more power and you can always swap cams later if you want a little more. The LS6 cam isn't the greatest for that motor but its not going a dog by any means.

Well thats basically what i needed to know, the 5.3/ls6 combo was very lacking lol.

I would like to pick up some 243s but if i dont find any in my price range ill settle for 317s the bigger valves and flow #s compared to my 862s should be a sufficient upgrade.

I see 241s fairly cheap and they use same valves as 317 would they offer any benefit over the 317 to help the cr?

I'm running 5.3 heads (862's) with a pretty big cam and LS6 intake on a 370ci LQ9, and it runs hard man! I'm running 11.5:1 compression as well

I'm running milled 317s on mine with a decent sized cam an it flies! My compression is 10.5:1. Even though it's a mild build I would get something a little bigger than the ls6 cam

Hey Trevor nice build. I would definitely pick up some 243s and run a lil larger cam. Something around 228/228 for a dd. The bigger cubes will soak up a healthier cam. I could probably find u a set of 243s if your interested.

I was about to run that cam in my truck with a 5.7 and 243 heads. After asking around, it got a heavy NO vote. It was made for a higher revving light weight sports car, not a truck. I paid FTI for a custom cam spec'd for daily driving in a 2003 rcsb with a 3000 rpm stall. The specs are 215/223 609/592 112. Not aggressive at all, but thats what i asked for.

its not that i dont want to up the cam and go for 243s but this is my main transportation so in a tight spot to use what i got. Im just making sure im not hurting performance by running what i got now. This leaves room on the table for a future head/cam swap as well.

keep in mind im still on a 60e until i can fund a 80 too lol
