balancing a cast crank
balancing a cast crank I got my mahle pistons and scat forged I beam rods today. The difference in the weight of a stock piston, pin, rings, and rod and the ones I bought are well over 100 grams (each set), the lighter being the new ones. I'm going to get it balanced and was wondering if it will be any problem to balance the stock crank. The difference in weight seems to be big, but I weighed them on very accurate recently calibrated scales. thanks
When the bobweights are made up roughly a hundred grams lighter, the shop will spin the crank and the machine basically tells them where to drill the hole. You're only looking at a 1" hole in the counterweight, roughly 3/4 to 1 inch deep. You'll know if the shop is competant or not by if they only have to drill a few holes on each end. Otherwise if it comes back looking like swiss cheese then that means they were chasing their tail all over the place.
Balance jobs get expensive if the new bobweight comes in heavier and they have to drill and install mallory(heavy metal) which is like 40 bucks per chunk
