Default Cam help

OK, I know I will get throttled with the obvious "use the search" and such, but I am more lost now than before I started researching cams.

I have a set of PRC LS6 Stage 1 heads with upgraded .650 springs that I picked up for $600. I figure while I am installing the heads, I should do a cam as well. So, can anyone give me some ideas to help narrow the search?

I have a Yank SS3800, stock 2.73 gears, 1.75" long tube headers, LS6 intake and a magnaflow catback. Drivability and reliability are more important that peak numbers for me. I would like a smoother idle as well. Getting too old to want to deal with a loud and lopey exhaust note.

I would really appreciate the help as my family life has really killed the time I have for research.

Gregg

Those gears are going to kill alot of cam choices. We just custom ground a cam for a customer with 2.73s and he LOVES IT.
Plus, our custom cams are cheaper than alot of off shelf grinds!
Let us know if we can help you!!!

2.73s won't make much difference with a stall. They affect how the stall behaves, but the stall makes up for whatever the cam is doing down-low, since you'll hardly ever be below 2500 with part throttle. Now, in OD, it can cause the RPM to drop pretty low as you loft along with the converter locked, so overlap makes a difference there.

I'd go with an EPS 222/226 115. It has made 400rwhp with a stock LS1 and 430rwhp in a crate LS6. With the ported heads, it'll work well, loft along nicely, and make enough power throughout the powerband to match the 3800 stall.

If you make the cam too big or the cam timing isnt properly specd and the lockup kicks in at too low an rpm(which it will with 2.73s), it will still cause lots of problems.
We can get you the exact cam you are looking for, custom or off shelf.

I did forget to put a target HP goal in my original post. I would say about 425 would be great.

The 2.73's are nice for cruising but I am not opposed to changing my gear either. I would most likely go with 3.23's especially if I could get my hands on a Torsen T2R to go with those.

Lockup is controlled in the PCM. In my 02, you tune your shift points by MPH. You can command whatever RPMs you want, but the MPH criteria must be met first. At least from what I've seen.

Yes it is controlled by the pcm, but on larger stalls sometimes that becomes an issue as to when to lock it up, esp when you factor in a cam that is too big and gears that are too small for the cam. If you lock it up at too low an RPM for your MPH it will surge and buck and lock and unlock constantly just like if you didnt have a stall at all on a big cam. If you dont lock the converter, you can experience many issues including excessive transmission heat, wear, slippage of the TC and poor MPG. The lockup in an Fbody is by tps and mph and actual gear the trans is in at the time.
You can tune your shift points in an fbody by mph or rpm, either way.
