Default Installing head and cam...have a ?

Fellas,

My buddy will be giving me a hand and helping me install my head and cam. I was looking at the ls1howto write up.

My question is for an auto do i need a flywheel locking tool?

I know that write up is pretty old but very helpful. Just wondering if there was anything else that i didnt need to do? Im hoping everything goes smooth.

I just jam a prybar through the holes in the flexplate between the inspection cover to get the converter bolts off... works every time.
After you get the trans off IF you need to take off the flex plate the torque arm mount can be bolted to the block to make a makeshift holding tool

The tool isn't a must but there is a guy in classifieds who sells them for cheap, probably worth grabbing one.

I just wedged a 3/4" wrench through the harmonic balancer against the AC compressor. Worked like a charm.

Thanks for the reply fellas. Got the heads off and just need to pull out stock cam.

2002 Blue, thanks man. Your advice worked like a charm.

Just 2 more questions....

1. Any tips/tricks on installing a oil pump? I heard thats a PITA.

2. I had to pull out my tranny dipstick. I just want to make sure there is no piece that attached to the tranny dipstick correct? Aside from a bolt?

Make sure you put the o ring on the pickup and not inside the pump or you'll be doing it again. For the pump the easiest way I've found is to line up the keys before putting it on the crank snout then slide it on while you work on the pickup. Then make sure the o ring ain't pinched before torqueing down the pickup

Your prolly done with this now but stuff a rag in the pan around the pickup tube when removing and installing the pickup tube and pump bolts that way if u drop one it doesn't fall down in the pan
