Default Street/strip cam

Hello all! I have quick question on which cam would best suit me and my camaro. It's a 2000 SS it's bone stock now but I have a Weaind aluminum intake, TSP 1 7/8 longtubes, and TSP true dual exhaust system ready to go on the car. So I'd like any insight on which cam will give me the most power, yet still be reliable and street worthy. I will also be getting a tune after it's all said and done. Thank you very much!

if a cam has too much lift you may have to cut the pistons for more clearance. decide what your goals are then call a few sponsors but checkout 228 or a comp cam 228/230 with 585 lift (i think) keep in mind you usually have to rev very high to reach max power with these bigger cams. better springs are a must.

true. before you can select the "best" cam you have to figure out what your goals are for the car? Do you want all the power up top or more evenly distributed, o you car if it surges like hel under 2k or do you want it to be more pleasent etc

id like it to be as evenly distributed as possible. I wanna race it but also be able to take it out on dates and car shows as well.

Keep in mind that when choosing a cam, bigger isn't always better.
Too big, and you'll have such tremendous serge that you won't enjoy driving the car after a whole (if it's a daily)

Also, just for reference on a mild 230/234 cam, I made 450rwhp.
That is with heads and intake as well though.

The FTI StreetSweeper cam I used to have in my LS1 worked well in both worlds and also with the stock 241 heads and later CNC'd 243 heads. It's low lsa made tons of torque down low that carried up to 6,400 RPM. After I tweaked the tune I could lug it at 1,200 RPM across a parking lot without any bucking. Great street/strip cam that didn't rely on peak "numbers" even though it was no slouch. Made close to 400 RWHP w/241 and 440 w/243s

If you want to keep good manners and still have useable power then something in the 228/234 range with a 112-114 lsa will be good. that will your overlap between 4-8 degrees which is fine for a driver

OP, lots of sponsors here that you can contact and talk to that will help you meet your goals...

I myself had an FTI HellRaiser, tweaked a bit and made great power.

OP, you sound like you're new to all of this, so instead of buying an off the shelf cam without talking to a sponsor first would not be good. Best thing to do is have one of the sponsors on here hook you up with a custom or shelf cam that will meet all of your goals. Too many times people pick a cam that they end up not liking because they didn't do their research or didn't completely think it through. Hook up with someone like Martin Smallwood with Tick Performance. He will treat you right.

No. He said "street / STRIP" cam.

I daily drove a 229/236 and it gave no headaches.

I think the best question for the OP is who is his tuner, and how much experience does he have? That is going to dictate a lot.

keep in mind your best info will be from sponsors if you give them your specific goals. msg board posters vary but i've seen plenty that stick a race cam in and call it a daily driver. ask where the cams peak horse power is and decide if you want to rev that high to use it. my mellow ls6 cam peaks at 5750 rpm and i only rev to 6k so life is good for me. that doesnt mean the cam cant run higher. im not willing to rev to 6500 are you?

any aftermarket cam is going to peak at 6k or more. no ones putting one in and shifting at 6k its a waste of time and power. stock ls motors rev to 6500 no problem ls6's cam that way from the factory even pre 01 ls1's with the weaker bolts are comfortable at 6500

i agree op call a sponsor. But just as a general rule of thumb any cam with less than 8 degrees overlap will drive pretty decent and can be a good dd with a proper tune

That's a pretty good rule of thumb to go by here. If your using an ls6 intake make sure you keep it in the back of your mind your car will peak at 6200 regardless of the cam.
