Default LS1 Squealing noise

hi all

this is my MK2 Escort with LS1 conversion over in Scotland, as you can hear its got a loud squealing noise when running, i disconnected the belt and its still there, any ideas what i could be ? could it be the cam ? no idea of engine spec i presume its std, you dont hear noise when engine is on load just on idle and slightly when cruising

Squeals can come from a number of items on the LS engines, have you tried a mechanics stethoscope or the poor mans one ' long screw driver to the ear'.

First I'd take the belt off and start it again.
That car looks fun it can't weigh much.

hi Folks

thanks for reply, defo not water pump or any pulleys as ive changed the water pump and ran the engine with the belt off and squealing noise is still there, it could be oil temperature related as it doesnt happen all the time, it only happens when the engine is really hot, im gonna try a more thicker heat resistant oil to see if that helps, i currently run Royal Purple 10W 40

has anyone had issues like this before ?

many thanks for any help :-)

There was one post recently that had this issue. It turned out to be the guy had the PCV lines reversed. He fixed them and the noise went away.

The cam doesn't squeal,
Stick a srew driver to your ear with belts off & see if you can trace the noise

As has been said, PCV will squeal and make a hell of a noise

My cam most certainly did squeal, kind of like a chirping sound. Wasn't too noticeably at startup but then got louder as it warmed up. Cam took a crap and chewed up the lifters (Futral F13)

How is your oil pressure??

That sounds to me like a bearing, or at least a rotational noise of some sort. Vac leaks will typically have a more hissy or whistley sound to them, and would probably get louder with more air flow.

I had a similar noise with the VG motor that used to be in my Z. The water pump pulley was rubbing on the lower timing cover as I had installed it slightly out of alignment. It sounded almost exactly the same, and it made more noise when it was hot because everything would expand slightly and rub harder.

What was the onset of the issue? Has this motor always made this noise or did it perhaps come up after a missed shift or otherwise stressful event? Have you eliminated drivetrain-related items like pilot bushing/clutch(if equipped), torque converter, etc? Is it any louder under the car than under the hood? Not likely but all easier than a rebuild!

Longer shot - I assume you don't have A/C on that thing..but it does run off a separate belt.

Good luck!

Just making sure but did you also take the a/c belt off if you still have it?

Ha! We get so caught up in being smart guys we forget to check the simple stuff! Now that's where it could tie back into PCV.. It may just be a leaky gasket on the filler cap but also PCV is what causes the vacuum in the crankcase and therefore suction at the cap. So if fooling around with the cap doesn't fix it, you may look to PCV.

Good find!

Never removed the PCV altogether..it's a $3 part so I never really resented it. What did you run the hose into/onto then? If you are running any kind of crankcase ventilation I would still rig up a proper catch can. Surprised you don't see any oil in any of the lines. That's the LS dirty intake curse and is still a real design head-scratcher for me. But I'm dealing with it..with a catch can.

Good luck!
