Default What do you guys think about this cam?

I have been looking at the Texas Speed 228R. What do you guys think about it.

It is a 228/228 I believe 588 (or about that) lift.. and it is on a 111 lobe.

Would this be alright with stock heads.

What else would you guys recommend for big power and great sound w/ stock heads and with stage 2 on an M6 car?

My opinion, I would go with something smaller with stock heads. If you plan on replacing the heads in the future then possibly. With the 111 Lsa your going to have a choppy idle.

With Stock heads B1, or the T1 for a more loppier idle. Or Tr 220/220...

Stage II heads C2, or something similar.

I am actually looking forward to a really choppy idle.

Mechanically, would there be a problem with a cam with these specs. Should I be worried about breaking things..i.e. valve springs.

I want big power.. but useable power. It will be driven mostly on the steet.

What are some other good cams.. that are big, and will give great power with a nasty idle?

If you don't think bigger is better with stock heads, let me illustrate. FACT: With stock heads, you can't utilize 100% of the usable power of a big cam. FICTION: If you have stock heads, you should stick with a smaller duration cam. FACT: Stock LS1 heads will stall out at .550 lift. FICTION: Anything bigger than a 220 duration will give no more power on the same lift. IMO, go as big as you feel comfortable on the cam. I was victim of these theories at first, so I settled with the TR224 cam. Made great power, and had good track times. Then I moved up to a 230/226 .591 cam, and made almost 20rwhp more. This is with the stock heads also. Track times dropped over two tenths, and mph gain was 3mph. Don't settle for a smaller cam just because it won't be 100% efficient with with stock heads. IMO, go big.

I think these new "Big cams" on stock heads are making good numbers because of their duration. I am thinking a 230/230 .560/.560 on 112 would be a good "big" stock head cam.

I don't care if it is choppy at idle, but how hard is it to tune a 111 lobe cam?

Will a big cam increase the chance of breaking something?

I believe it's more the ramp rate and the lift that break springs, not "big" in duration. Seems like you can tune almost anything with enough "creativity" in LS1edit. I don't know why you would want to go less than a 112 LSA to get more lope; those things can lope big time! Just lower the idle 100 rpm.

I have that cam in my auto and I love it. Here is what mine sounds like though Mac headers ORP, dynomax bullet, cutout behind the axle.

I have a very similar spec cam to the one your thinking about, 228/228 560 110 lsa.
In Aussie dyno figures it makes 340 rwhp which works out at roughly 380 - 390 rwhp on your dyno's.(so Im told)

My car is daily driven here in Australia and after a geat tune it behaves almost like a stocker. Idle is pretty choppy but sounds great.

I have a cam very similar to yours on the way, it's the comp 228 xe-r (228/228 .588/.588 112) Only diff is it's on a 112 lobe seperation. I can't wait till it gets here, and when it is in next weekend, i'll try and get some sound files of it up. But keep in mind it'll be untuned for a little while, so I hope I don't stall every stop light!

Shoot me a pm, and let me know what others you have done, and what it puts down on the dyno and at the track, thanks man!
