With out Current conversation the site would die. Don't worry about Mr. search. Ask away. It sounds like you want to start right away. Unless the rest of your car is done, suspension, rear end, trans, clutch. I would just start your build up. It could take a while to save up 15K PLUS!!! Either way good luck.

........i don't know what it is about me, but i'd really like to go without forced induction; don't ask me why i'm not really sure, other than that pure cubic inches just seems right to me.....watch, another year from now i'll pry have big NOS stickers on the back of my electra..just kidding.....yeah, i do want to start right away, but i may have enough to keep me going while i save the $$$$$ for the 427....and the cars still fun right now....i'm goin to take it to the track maybe next friday to see what it'll do..... wtf is this?.....the turbos are just hanging out

If you can save for the 427 and the other upgraded stuff you'll need (rear end, tranny, etc), I'd go that route too.
You'll definitely save $ in the long run as opposed to going bolt on's, h/c and then stroker. Besides, imagine what it would feel like going from a stock/bolt on LS1 to a stroker.

.... should i go the easy route, be impatient, stick with the 346 and do all the bolts ons, cam heads and ect., or do i bide my time, save up my pennys, and get an ape 427? .....
Good luck,
Mark

thanks guys for all the input i am still getting.....on one hand, i could spend 20k or so for the motor, rear end, tranny, ect. and still pay less than i would have buying a new ss in 2002, on the other hand, perhaps thats not the wisest way for me to spend my money right now.......i kinda want to do something out of the ordinary, which is always gonna cost more, but we will see........heck, even the 427's aren't that out there, as far as being different, really......i really want to be hands on with building it my way, but this isn't exactly the ideal starter project.....i figure maybe i'll let the pros take care of this one, and i'll do my buick 455......i plan on stopping in at ape next week to check out their shop, and i'm sure they'll have some advice as well........thanks again everyone who has taken the time to read and respond to my questions

1st thing 1st... go the grow route...why...cause you can start now and enjoy the progress. After all, no good respectable drug user when straight to Heroin, you gotta start with pot, move to Extacy, some schrooms , liquid, ludes, crack, dust, then inject away...
Part of the fun is the growth...it's also where you learn. We all have locals who have big HP cars cause they dropped the dime, but couldn't tell you how may head bolts they have per cylinder.
Yes, it will cost you more in the long run, but the long run will be more fun. Have fun today and have APE build you a head/cam set-up... then later toss on a small shot...run it, then, when the addiction is nice and strong, and your income is hopefully up...you can fund it...which of course, is when you find out this addiction is as strong as any drug addition out there... only its legal so theres no 800 number or hotline to call.
By the may, my name is Jammer and I'm an torqueaholic.

Idealy it would be great to go 427 right off the bat but everybody does the head/cam and everything else to the 347 and upgrades when it breaks
. I say start doing the mods for the 347 but keep in mind that one day you will need to go bigger.
. I say start doing the mods for the 347 but keep in mind that one day you will need to go bigger. From personal experience going the whole shebang off the bat, I'd go the grow route too but only for one reason, it's fun to learn but you don't want to learn on your $13,000 engine. Build your car up first to support the engine and do all those small relatively cheap mods that have to be done eventually anyway, learn about tuning and how to listen to your engine, and save the lions share of your dollars for the engine down the road. With a 427 you'll need a new rear end, tranny, rollcage (if you want to do more than a couple runs before getting tossed off the track), fuel components, and more. The whole intake/head technology is really coming to fruition this year and the blocks are reliable now. You've got a great benefit in that APE is right down the road. Use them for EVERYTHING and don't try to mix and match from different vendors. It's keeps the finger pointing to a minimum when things don't work out quite right. You will run into problems at some point (it's just inevitable when you're dealing with high performance stuff) but with a reliable vendor like APE just down the road they should take good care of you.

dude, the junkie analogy was off the charts
i'm not all about having something and not knowing how it does what it does, so i'll definetely take that into consideration....while i make a good living, i'm not spending all my cash on my car, so perhaps building my way up to living in a van down by the river is the way to go, rather than just snorting a bottle of crushed oc......it also helps that i'm hearing from people who have done it both ways and some would have still done it that way and some wouldn't have.......i honestly don't think i'm going to be able to wait to feed the addiction.......if i want to end up doing something out of the box, it would pry be good to get my feet wet first with something closer to the norm......i'm for sure going up to ape this week.....hopefully they haven't been flooded out, we've been getting some ridiculous storms up here.......

Well another advantage to going the grow route is you get use to the power before you go to the next level. Because I am here to tell you that jumping into a 427 and dropping the hammer is a great way to become one with the car... (by hitting something)
No not that I have but it is a much different feel to have that much torque, I run an A4 with a 3200 stall and it does not matter how fast I am going, if I flash the converter it is going to spin the Nitto's You will have to learn how to launch the car and hitting the converter on the street is not the right way unless your in a burnout contest. My point to all this is having 500hp under your foot requires some common sense otherwise you or someone else will become an organ donor.

.........whatever i do, i'll make sure i'm prepared and not putting anyone in danger when i learn the car's limits....i know, i know, easy to say and hard to put into practice....besides, i already drive a car with 510lbs of torque
of course it's a 5000 pound convertible, but same thing, right?
ummm, did you say flood...not good, Let Minnasota be the land of 1000 lakes, keep APE dry, at least while my car is there.... I can hear it now, Brian...go get another sump pump....
