Default LQ4 bottom end noise, with video.

Trying to figure out what this noise is, its been happening for quite a while, and is present during cold start, warm start, running, etc. Oil pressure appears to be fine, but i'm going to re-check with a manual gauge.

Motor is a 2001, roughly 170k on the clock. Swapped into a jeep wrangler.

I appreciate any help, just trying to get an idea before I tear the motor down.

Does the noise frequency increase with RPM? Have you tried running without belts(for a very short time) to eliminate accessories as possible cause?

You'd need to localize the source of the noise with a $20 mechanic's stethoscope. Sounds too loud to be inside the oil pan, but impossible to be certain from a video. Get a stethoscope and probe around, you'll find the source quickly.

Removing the belt(s) is a good immediate next step to rule out accessories, just do it quickly so you don't overheat the engine.

Pulled the belt a while ago, don't remember there being any difference. This noise has been there for a while, but i don't put crazy miles on this either. I'll pull it again tomorrow.

I've been noticing oil consumption going up the past 6 months, but its random. I made a 5-600 mile trip this weekend, mostly highway, a bit of offroading nothing crazy. I drove casually the whole way up, usually running around 1850-2100rpm depending on speed. Checked oil when i got there, nothing noticeably burnt. Drove around for a bit, made a few WOT passes, and drove home, again, seeing a bit more throttle than the trip up. Burnt a little over 1.5 qts. This is in about 500 miles. Catch can is also filling up with oil. Have to dump it out to measure it, but its been on there for all of 750 miles, and it seems to have an awful lot of oil in it.

I don't notice any oil burning smells at startup, no smoke, no real considerable leaks. But when free revving, and sometimes on WOT, i can smell oil burning.

RPM vs. the noise... It increases its frequency until about 1000-1200rpm, then i don't hear it anymore.

I have a scope at work, i'll check it out tomorrow morning and report back.

Well? I feel teased with the video and no conclusion!

One thing you can do is put the vehicle in gear and load the engine against the brakes to see if it gets louder or more intense with load. If it does, it could be loose flexplate bolts if it is an automatic. Or, it may indicate a connecting rod or wrist pin problem.

Ever find out the cause of this? Mine makes the exact same noise, roughly the same miles also.

Sounds like my header flange gasket leak at the head. I thought for sure it was a lifter until I found the leak on the underside.
