Default found metal in the intake (pic)

My friend found metal in his intake manifold . We have no idea where it came from . maybe piston ring ?

The symptom was knocking sound from the intake.
The car is C5 Ls1 H/C.

The long slivers might be. The smaller pieces almost look like the locks in the retainers.

I don't see how it could be anything from the valve train, I don't see any way possible for something under the valve cover to make it into the intake tract. If someone can tell me how that could be possible I'd like to know?
As far as it being anything related to the pistons, I've only ever saw that in major blow ups when valves contact pistons and starts eating itself.
I would look at everything leading into the intake itself.
How was the car running other than the sound coming from the intake?

Piston came apart. That ring's an piston material.

It was probably flat and got curled up. Pull the heads and you see the damage in the combustion chamber.

BTW don't reuse that intake on the next engine. There are probably more smaller pieces that have not come out.

Go to Autozone and borrow an inspection camera to inspect inside the spark plug holes; less labor.
Or buy one: http://www.harborfreight.com/High-Re...der-60695.html

That's what it looks like to me too. Probably lifted a ring land.

Can start with a compression test. I would remove the intake and inspect.

Very common, did you have a "tune" in it? I'm assuming you did because it is a H/C car. Next time you have it tuned don't go for MAX hp. Go for KEEP NUMBER 7 alive. The factory stays way rich to be sure it lives a long life. The only LS1 car I had tuned lost number 7 piston after hard driving........no more for me.

Number 7 runs lean and hot.

I'm glad you found the problem but how the hell did a broken piston part end up in the intake manifold??

It must have backfired the ring land into the intake. Happens a lot on blower cars.

we see it all the time....
find pieces in the other side of the engine from where the broken piston is

anytime something comes loose inside a cylinder, it can come up and bounce around the intake...
air doesnt just go in the intake and out the exhaust....
it mostly does, but it breathes both ways at the cam overlap.

piston parts often end up in the intake and then crossing to somewhere else causing more damage

hell... I've even seen half a valve end up in another cylinder....

this is why you always make sure you have a steam vent/cross over setup....and never block off the rear ports

This I agree with and recommend. BUT there are many that say the rears aren't needed at all.

its been proven repeatedly that it helps with the back cylinder heat
and it allows air and steam to escape that gets trapped back there.

theres a reason they keep that rear vent on the nascar LS engines

and I can tell you as an engine builder, I see less problems with #7 and #8 on the engines that have the rear vent/crossover setup
