Yep. I just re-lap the valves to make sure the seats and valve face still look good.

Gasket remover and let it set for couple hours, melts it right off.

DO NOT USE A WIRE WHEEL
very bad choice....causes scuffs, scratches, and divoits that can create hot spot and weak spots in the piston

we like to use Aircraft Stripper... spray it and let it sit for 10-15 minutes....
wipes right off...pistons come out clean
for engines with a lot of miles and a lot of carbon build up...you might need to spray it twice.

oh...and wear gloves..LOL

I think KCS was thinking of if pistons were out of the engine whereas most of the guys responding are talking about in the engine and/or still in the car.

Some kind of solvent and Scotchbrite and or a wire wheel with appropriate force is also good on stubborn carbon. You can clean a bit and then let it soak in something like Safety Kleen again and after a few times most will come off if it's not really burned on there. Just have to CLEAN IT BACK UP PERFECT before reassembly. Wiseco and some other piston companies deburr their pistons with a CNC wire brushing but obviously the devil's in the details!

The best thing, gasoline. Like dissolves like. So if the pistons are still in the motor, soak a paper towel in gas and leave it on the pistons for a little while and you'll be amazed at how well it works.
