I have found a purple version of simple green at Home Depot, I was very surprised how
well it worked, I cleaned entire block so far then quickly wiped down cylinder walls with a WD40 soaked lint free rag, rinsed with water, wiped down cylinder walls again with same
rag, then used compressed air to dry. Parts looks good

Simple Green for the grease and oil part. And then a soft wire wheel in a drill motor for the crusty stuff. Easy Off oven cleaner works pretty good, too. But it can be pretty rough on the hands.

Careful using degreasers on aluminum because most will etch aluminum given some time, like say the puddle that gets down into the ring lands and not flushed out when you are done cleaning the crown.

Yea, that's why I figured I would ask, don't want to do any damage to the piston. I'm going to go grab some purple power/simple green and soft bristle wheel for my drill. Thanks guys

Simple Green and Purple Power are degreasers. Something like Seafoam has naphtha which is a good carbon solvent, and doesn't have anything to hurt aluminum.

I know folks are going to claim I am wrong about the degreasers but it takes time to do the damage. Doubt you will hurt the crown because you will wipe it off, the places it reaches that you miss are the concern.

There isn't any aluminum in the cylinders.

Why worry about a little carbon on the crowns anyway?

X4 wire wheel. Brake clean. Blow it off with air compressor. Done. I do this on valves too.
