How much "Meat" is on an LS head CC?

Default How much "Meat" is on an LS head CC?

Can an LS casting (243, 317, 706 etc.) be converted from a closed to an open combustion chamber style head? Or is there not enough material?

Just guessing the General tries to save a few pennies of alloy per casting I'd say NO....but if you cut one apart or look for already existing pics you might find out otherwise.
I'm guessing you're figuring for a boosted app but I seem to remember reading that the smaller the chamber the lower the Brake Specific Fuel Consumption......aka higher efficiency
Lastly if you could do that you will undoubtedly end up with thinner spots which in a high horsepower boosted application will lead to detonation. Too thin areas of combustion chambers retain heat and cause issues. Smokey Yunich helped the Ford guys back in the day with the tunnel-port design heads that experienced this very issue....true story

317 heads are already big.... keep in mind the chamber is a continuation of the port, changing it drastically could help/hurt flow.

Just curious, I don't have a junk head to cut up or I would. Thought someone else might have already done it. Efficiency aside, a hemispherical CC with zero quench has its own advantages in big boost applications.

ive got a ole junk 862 head ill cut up,, he sent me a pic where to cut at...I was going to use it fly cut my pistons. ill prob cut in half and use the 2 good cly to flycut with,,, ill get some pics in a few days

ive seen them pics,, but they have nothing to do from what hes wanting to see from the combustion chamber,,,, like for me I want to know how much you can take down the rocker bolt hole.

Get a scrap head and start cutting... That's the only way to know, but there is not enough material there.
