Default Cam Degree

So I just got done installing a New Engine into my 01 TA. its an ls1. Bought the engine from a buddy of mine he built it a while ago over year or so. Everything brand new. it has an MS3 cam only problem was I didn't check if he advanced the timing on the cam and he doesn't remember, started the car, running a super rich and doesn't stay running.. could be the duestchwerks injectors on stock tune....
But my question is there a way to tell if the timing is advanced without tearing my engine apart? is something possible that a tuner could do?

Thank you for all the help in advance.

no not really. did he use an adjustable timing set? If not then theres no way to even advacne the cam to begin with. If you have larger injectors dont run the car as they can wash out the rings. Use stock injectors until you get to the dyno. With the ms3 cam im not surprised it wont stay running.

If you can get it started and hold the throttle open for a few mins and then slowly let it return to idle it may be able to learn and idle on its own.

Thanks for the inquiry. ill have to ask him about the adjustable timing set... and Thank you for the telling me about wash out. never heard of that before... I haven't ran the engine for more then 10 minutes total if even.. I have AMS oil Break in oil in it to help better seat the rings. hopefully it didn't wash out the rings?

Guess my best option would be to take to the dyno with a good tuner for break in?

well if you have some stock style injectors theres no harm in just doing some light pulls to get everything seated just dont over do it. If not then yes I would wait until you atleast get a base tune before really driving it

If you are running a stock tune with larger injectors, then yes, you are going to be running stupid rich.

No the tuner wouldn't be able to do it through the ECM or anything, but you could degree the cam off the retainer, or it may just be easier to pull the front cover and take a look at the timing set.
