Default cam swap advice

Hello fellow ls owners,

I got a comp cams thumpr prt 54-600-11 im about to install in the 98 trans am. My question is ive seen videos with cam installs on the f bodies and they didnt get a tune prior to starting the car with the new cam. I know a tune will utilize its full potential, but must it be done right away? Any advice or tips. Have a wonderful day!

You can start the car but you'll want it done right away. Different cams react differently but drive-ability and keeping it from stalling will suck and I wouldn't go WOT until you get your fueling tuned in. You're asking the engine to breathe in more air and you need the commensurate amount of fuel with it

Svede pretty much nailed it but I have to wonder why you'd even consider doing it that way

Imo, wait until you have enough for the tune. Then try to schedule getting the tune done ASAP after the cam is installed.
BTW you can drive it before the tune, but try to minimize it and no WOT until after the tune.
