Default timing chain issues

I `m doing a cam+lifters change on a 2004 LQ4 .....

ordered a new single thru roller timing chain kit because the original one was loose .....

installed the new timing chain kit .....The chain has a loose like the old one .
this never happened before on other type of engines .....(this is my first LS build )

normaly the chain is really tight when new ...is this normal with the LS ?

thanks

When I done my Ls1 build the motor had 80k miles on it. I went ahead and bought a Ls2 chain and installed it. It was just slightly tighter than the original. 80k miles did not take much toll on the stock chain.

You want perfection, Cloyes Hex a just gears with C5-R extreme duty chain or Hinson C7-R. Add the LS2 damper.
If the blocks not drilled for the damper use the Trickflow damper bracket.

what does the brand has to do with this ?

It`s a cloyes true roller single chain kit

both gears + chain in kit ..............

in 35 years , never saw this happen before ....

I just want to know if it`s normal for an LS or should it be real tight like the other engines....

I installed a LS2 chain on my Ls1 engine and the new chain was just as slack as the old one. I was very disappointed.

Mine was a new rebuild with new bearings. Cam bearing wear would have to be pretty bad to produce that much chain slack.

Yes it is normal...LS1's tend to have a little more slack in the chain when cold

My LS2 chain on 15 thousand mile factory gears was also loose at room temp.
My guess is the all alloy block grows at operating temp and the rollers tighten a bit with oil splash on them as well.
The dampener (LS1 from Katech, LS2, or Trick Flow) is a great idea but not entirely mandatory.

My stock 170k mile ls1 chain and gears were a little loose before my cam install. New ls2 chain with new cam made no difference in the ammount of slack. My 67,xxx clean as a pin LQ4 with new LS2 chain and comp cam is slightly loose just like the LS1 setup was. Im almost positive all LS based engines have slack in the factory style timing chain setups.

Agreed. The oil pressure would likely drop drastically long before that much cam bearing wear would show in the chain.

I was putting my cam in my engine today and was going to reuse the chain but it was real loose too. Cam bearings are brand new. I was going to order a new one until I read this. I have never built an engine that the chain wasn't super tight on it so I just assumed the chain was stretched. Not sure what to do now. I cant leave it like that the cam timing will be all over the place. I need to do more research on this one.

Any fresh rebuild should get a new chain from a reputable maker.

While you're in there, consider a timing chain damper.

Only problem here is you expect it to be tighter than necessary, adjust your expectations.

Dwaine , You & me have been in engines for years ,

this time I was surprised to see this situation .....
even our old LT1 `s are tighter then that when new chain is installed ,

If it`s this way ,ill keep going on , it`s just that I have never seen this and I wanted to be reassured......

I wonder if this "loose" is considered when cam is dialed .......

I've got a Rollmaster single chain set which is actually pretty firm, very little slack at all, I'll also be using an LS6 damper which won't make the chain much, if any firmer anyway, maybe try a Rollmaster set and see how it is.
The standard chain that came off after 200 000+ km was so loose the cam timing would have been retarded about 4 degrees.

Best wishes,
Jason.
