Default LS1-LS6 opinion

Getting some engine work done on my 98 LS1. Went with an LS6 intake, comp XR265HR cam,and long tube headers...and also a tune by somebody very talented. My question is how bad is it going to hurt me by using my stock heads? Putting different springs, lifters and hardened push rods in the head. I just couldn't afford the heads yet. What do you guys think? Value ur opinions....

Thanks alot

I don't have much experience but let me take a guess; I'm sure the others will correct me if I'm wrong.
Your cam has 212* Intake duration and 218* Exhaust duration @ .050 and -6.5* of overlap. .522 and .529 Lift.
It's going to idle almost like stock, be easy to tune and your MPG might even improve. Your valve springs should last a long time, PAC .600 beehives would be my choice. Comp says it peaks at 6000 rpm and a LS6 intake peaks at 6200. Your going to have plenty of torque everywhere and will be faster than some over-cam'd cars. I would guess 360 HP

I don't think your stock 853s will hold you back too much. I don't know your budget or what you were planning. If you had a lot to spend some AFR 205 would be super. Guess 430 HP. If it were my engine (broke as I am) I would get some 862 casting 5.3 heads and get a shop to put 2.02 valves in them and a 5-angle valve job. Guess 390 HP. The 11:1 compression they would give you would make for some instant throttle response.
If you were to go for the Scoggin Dickey LS6 heads with their 250 cc intake port, it would be a bad choice. You want to maximize port speed.
I would wait on the lifters until you got heads, no use replacing head bolts and gaskets twice. Get a oil pump and timing set instead. Good luck with it Bohnseye, you made a sane choice. It should be very reliable and fun.

It's not going to hurt anything...it's just going to be roughly 30-50 hp that you won't have
