I hear piston noise and lifters in your video, if the lifters got louder try putting about 8 ozs of automatic transmission fluid in the engine oil. This will quiet them down and won't hurt anything. Next time you change oil go with a full synthetic, Its a lighter oil and will help quiet these noises. Heavier oil will just make it worse.

I'm running amsoil signature series 5w-30 full synthetic. That's when the noise started.

Well they can be very noisy engines. Mine is very noisy and has been this way for over 50k miles. I went to a heavy duty truck oil 10-30 Delo 400 XLE and added 3 ozs of transX transmission sealer. This cut the noise way down but its still there if you listen carefully. Good Luck but I still wouldn't worry too much unless you see metal in the oil<silvery look to it> something like that.

I saw fine metal shavings almost like metal dust on the drain plug last time I did an oil change. Is that normal?

I wouldn't say normal, I'd keep a eye on that situation for sure. Normal would be a very very fine almost paste like dark collection on the magnet. If you think its getting louder I would pull the oil drain plug and check it for metal also pull the oil filter open it up and look for metal in there. Who know you may have a lifter coming apart? There has never been metal on my drain plug. Try pulling the oil dip stick, then carefully check it for signs of metal collecting on it. If you use a clean white rag you can wipe it see what you get. The dip stick tends to collect metal if its in the oil moving around.

My 99ta dip stick always had a little metal on the dip stick, car ran ok for 130k. I never tore into it to find out why but it had noisy lifters from day one.

I've also had better luck with blends than full synthetics.

Did you look for tiny air bubbles on the dip stick? I'd add 3 ozs of TransX just to see if it helps. That's a 01, long time for that oring.

Mine is just about silent now since I put it in 2k ago. Car never ran better.

Change oil and put in 6qrts of 10/40 Valvoline conventional. It quieted my car down big time. Synthetic oil is very thin looking compared to the same weight conventional.

When I bought mine in 06 I went out and got Royal Purple and it became much louder. I noticed a bit of piston slap as well. Drained the RP after a couple days, went with Valv. 10/40 conventional- sounded fine and don't hear the piston slap.

If you change oil every 3k conventional is fine.

There arent any tiny bubbles on the dip stick. Should I try German Castrol?

Its hard to tell you what to try honestly, Amsoil is great oil. I still think its possible you getting some air into the oil stream with that old oring in there. If you let it idle for 5 mins does it quiet down?

yes but while the engine rpm is dropping is when it's loudest. Around 1100 rpm

That's a very normal sound as the rpms drop in these LS1's, What I'm asking is this: Does the engine noise at idle quiet down? Dam hard to diagnose noises over the net. Normal engine noise at idle doesn't change, example my engine after driving a 2k rpm and coming to a stop idling would tick and tap BUT if I let idle for a few mins would quiet down<Classic symptoms of the oring leaking air into the oil stream. At 2k the amount of air entering the oil is enough to cause the lifters to start making noise. At idle the air purges out and they start to get quiet. Understand this? May help you diagnose this. I personally would try the TransX before you waste any more time. I think you have a worn oring, it deteriorates over time.

I did an oil change today and it had the paste you were talking about. nothing in the oil pan besides oil. put fresh oil in. the noise is still there. should i go back to semi synthetic? it didnt make the noise with that in the engine

That's because its probably a bunch thicker oil overall. Go back to the semi if it makes you happy. Personally I would try a few ozs of TransX , I'd bet money that oring is leaking a small amount of air into the oil stream. I know the exact noise you are hearing, ALL of mine have done it. Its a clattering sound as engine rpms drop. Its the valve train- lifters unloading.

I just listened to the second video you posted, that sounds like air in the lifters to me.
