Knock sensor seal breaking when installing valley cover

Knock sensor seal breaking when installing valley cover I am assuming I am having this problem because of something I'm doing wrong, but I don't know what. When I am putting the valley cover on, the seals are breaking the lip off trying to go over the bosses in the block.
Any advice?

Installing them in the valley cover then installing the vc to the engine or installing the vc then putting the seals into it and over the ks bosses at the same time?
I grease them up, wheel bearing grease is fine, install them into the vc then install the vc on the engine making sure to push it straight down onto the ks bosses.

Do the flat sides go down, i hope so, thats how im doing it.
