1998 trans am burning oil my ls1 trans am is having an issue. ok so I have noticed as I am driving there is a little smoke coming from under the hood on the drivers side. I popped the hood and let it idle and noticed that it is coming from the back of the engine but cant tell where. could it be the rear main seal or something else any suggestions would be appreciated. also I am getting parts together for a budget heads cam build the car has 180000 miles on it and am wanting to freshen up the top end.
Back of the drivers side is the oil pressure sending unit. That's the first thing I would check to see if it's leaking. You'll have to pull the intake manifold off to get to it. You will likely also find the valley covered in oil sludge from the crappy PCV the F body came with
Yea, what Darth said. Also if its smoking it has to be hitting the exhaust. The engine and trany cant get hot enough to make it actually smoke. You should be able to see where its hitting the exhaust and trace it back to its source. Unless its being wind blown while driving.
